Specsavers - quality and rights

  • Beware of this chain of opticians - there is no consistency in their advise to customers and they are only after making money rather than saving. The staff are so incompetant as they are overworked and undertrained. When you do come across a gem of a staff member they are quite frankly over ruled by their just graduated directors who think they know about customer care. It varies form branch to branch as some are franchised and some are owned outright. When they are challenged they can be so patronising too. I would take it up with the office of fair trading for them to take you seriously - also complain to the head office.
  • My branch is very good. When I lived in another town I didn't find them to be good, so I suppose it depends on the branch.
  • Just went through the palaver of getting four pairs of sample glasses from Glasses Direct, and went through ordering process on phone - only to find that the end price is so high that Specsavers current offer (free varifocal) beats them.

I thought the whole marketing thing of GD was that they undercut the high street by a huge amount. Well, £250 for my varifocals including a "free" second pair doesn't sound like cheap to me.

And I lost the £5 charge for getting the sample specs.

Used Specsavers for years and never had a problem.

I use two local branches of specsavers, one for glasses the other for contact lenses/retinopathy screening. I cannot recommend either branch highly enough. However my experience before moving to this area was totally different. Unfortunately you are totally reliant on the goodwill/expertise of the individual franchisee.

I had an eye test with SS recently and had it not been for a voucher they had sent me, i would have paid £20 for a test which lasted all of 15 mins - no word of a lie! I was v surprised the test was conducted so quickly, I would've thought 30 mins at least. Thank God for the voucher I had which meant I paid £10, but still, a tenner for 15 mins?! How can that be justified never mind £20 for 15 mins?!

    A completely silly comment !

Specsavers are a franchise type chain, therefore the differences between branches will be exactly the same as the differences between independent opticians.
EXCEPT, that the "brand" name should ensure better follow up in the event of any problems.
I have used two branches of Specsavers over the past 20 years and have always been totally satisfied with them.

    Why?

Alouise - did you take them back?!

No i didn't, know i should, but can't stand the way i know i will be patronised when i go in. (I'm a wimp. ) Also, always have a feeling that it's my fault and i didn't do the test right. Bought some reading glasses. Luckily i don't need them for all the time, just reading and internet. I went for the cheapish prescription ones in specsavers so they only? cost me £40

i have wore glasses for over 30 yrs and got two new pair last week ...i can see great out my reading glasses but ...VERY blurry out my distance glasses which i need due to bad eyesight long sighted / squint

i have gave it a week to ajust even though when i looked at the last prescription nothing had changed ...and feel like i am screwing my eyes trying to focus out left eye making me tense and sore head and eyes and unable to see clearly from about 20 feet away ..

i am going back in tommorow to see if they have made a mistake with the lenses

as happened last time with my reading glasses with them telling me i hadn't given them long enough when i told them at the fitting

Thats right, must be the poorly trained underpaid staff's fault!!!! I used to work for Specsavers and I loved my job, had to give it up as couldnt afford to work there anymore, they pay NMW only and no bonuses etc. When I worked there, I only recommended what was useful to the customers.

OP- specsavers have a 6month no quibble, no fuss policy which means you can get a refund or an exchange with "no quibble of fuss". They will however try to keep your custom first and try to resolve the issue in the first instance. Ask to speak to the store manager and if no luck, ask for the store director. Every store has at least 1 director and they will do whatever they can to help you and more importantly to them, keep your custom.
