Mother's Day - March 6th - what will you be doing?

I think my daughter should be making up for the fact that she was born the day after Mothers Day and so stopped me getting loads of freebies from the hospital
I think my neice and nephew should do the same for my sister as they also appeared the day after Mothers Day and being twins she perhaps would have got 2 lots of freebies.
Daughter is coming up 2
Twins are nearly 4.

In our family, we've all agreed that Mother's Day has become too overcommercialised. As a result, what would normally be a perfectly acceptable present e.g. flowers, chocs, meal out - have simply become cheesy and expensive. I positively cringe at all the insincere and naff sentiments that are trotted out by anyone trying to make a buck out of the event.
So ... just a card. Same at Christmas for the same reason. Then, with the pressure off, we buy a gift for eachother whenever we happen to see something suitable during the year.

My mum's 90th birthday is the Sunday after Mother's Day, and we are finding it hard enough to think of something suitable for that. She is still obsessed with her hair, which is pretty good for her age, so I think we are getting her a good quality bristle hairbrush (they are about £50  ). She really doesn't want for anything, and hardly ever gets out, being disabled, unless taken by car with wheelchair available at destination, and even then it's a struggle for her. On her birthday we are having a small family get-together (being a small family
) at my house.
But I digress... Mother's Day. She spends a lot of time resting or reading in her bedroom and likes looking out over the garden, but it is a bit bare in places, so we are getting her a holly bush (her request) and my hubby will plant it for her. He tends their garden all year round nowadays, as dad is pretty frail too, and I think that means more to them than fancy knicknacks.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Re the bristle hair brush. Mason & Pearson do them. You should get them in a large department store (John Lewis) or possibly a large independent chemist.
When my hair was long, it was the only thing I used and you can really tell the difference. Makes your hair shine!Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Thanks DFC - my sister is on the case for the hairbrush, as she lives in civilisation (the North West), while I live in the sticks! I think Maison Pearson was mentioned actually. They seem to have cornered the market for posh hair care!

Re 90th birthday. Recently it was my grandad's 90th birthday. We arranged a little party for him with all the relatives, grandkids, great grandkids, friends etc... He thought it was great and is still bragging about how many birthday cards he got. One of the rules for the party however, was not gifts, but a donation to a charity instead.
My little nephew had a great time running people over with his walker and demolishing the decorations on the table.
We thought that it was much nicer than a 'gift', especially as he didn't want any presents anyway...much for fun as well.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

My Mum will be getting a card as she really doesn't need anything and Mr Thrift and I will cook dinner for her, my Dad and my brother. My brother's part of the deal is he has to pick our parents up, bring them over, drink coke, and drive them home so they can both have some wine with their meal. :-) We do the same thing on Father's Day so both parents get to enjoy both days.0

We never spend much on mothers day presents, I've always bought my mum a bunch of flowers and she has been happy with that. From my own kids, breakfast in bed is great they are so proud of themselves! Their Dad usually gets a bar of chocolate, bunch of daffs or a magazine for them to give me.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

We will be going to the local church, we don`t normally go but we have been invited.
My two are both young, 1 in year 1 and 1 in playgroup, so they will be making me something.
It will be a sad day as my mum passed away before I even meet my hubbie and had kids. But we will talk about her and have a little cry.
We tell the kids that these days are just a way of people getting your money, and you should tell the people close to you that you love them whenever you can. We will make sure we spend some quality time together, no house work etc, and mum has sole control over tv and computer!!!JAN Grocery Challange £200
