You should have a list of acceptable id in your pack. There are other forms of id that you can provide although it is preferable to provide photographic evidence.
Just call your Solicitors office and speak to their secretary to see what they will accept. This evidence is a Government requirement. All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0 -
If you do have to get a passport to prove your ID, then it's a small cost in the overall scheme of buying a house.0

to a point i agree although a £154 for something we dont want atm :money:seems alot if there are other ways it can be done,i cant belive that every single house seller has a valid passport,or a photo dr.licence(mine was revoked 13 years ago for medical reasons and mrs woodbine never had a licence)0 -
I had this issue recently- I don't drive, and I had misplaced my passport.
My solicitor accepted a recent council tax bill, birth certificate and confirmation of earnings or something or other from HMRC. If you call HMRC, they will post the statement out within a couple of days, and apparently it is classed as id.0 -

Those who do but haven't moved or changed name in the last 10 or so years won't have a photo driving licence anyway.
Heck, some people won't even have a pink licence, I only do because I moved in the early-nineties, otherwise I'd still have a green one0 -
Ok
It is NOT a government OR a legal requirement for you to have to show photo ID, as it is NOT a government OR a legal requirement for anyone to actually possess photo ID and that is an undeniable fact
you only need a driving license of you drive, you only need a passport if you are a British citizen who wants to leave the country or a non British Citizen who has used one to actually enter the UK, a British citizen born here and never left is NOT legally required to buy a passport
In 2010 I sold my London Flat and bought a house with the cash from the proceeds ALL without any photo ID whatsoever.
The ID I gave my solicitor was my birth certificate (full one with both parents name on) marriage certificate, utility bill with current address on - as I understood it my Solicitor then made the necessary checks using that ID.
The EA who sold my house was given the same ID but as I understood it it was more to so with me being able to prove I actually owned the property I was selling than ML regs.
The EA I went through to buy my house didnt even asked me for any ID even though I was paying cash.
I am afraid this having to show photo ID malarky whether its for employment ML regs or anything else really annoys me so much so that I challenge it very loudly and guess what I ALWAYS win0 -
We bought for cash last year and never once was asked for id. but it was a solicitor i have used for other matters..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
just an update our solicitor said this morning that our out of date passports would be fine !0

Now if only the new coalition government had not cancelled the introduction of ID cards.....0
