Looked very carefully over my home contents cover before ringing them, and apparently I am covered after all. :) They're ringing me back in the morning to sort it out... Just wonder what they'll do about the valuation, because its an old bike we got secondhand. But it is new for old cover so we shall see...

They will replace it new for old via their own supplier. I had the same happen to me last April when my bike was stolen from a communal area outside my flat.:)

try and play the forensic psychologist, and closely watch the reaction of each fellow tenant as you broach the subject of the missing bike with them!

Get another bike, leave it unlocked too..... Hide with baseball bat and wait for someone to take it :)

Make sure you aim for head though, because then you can tell the Police "well he should have been wearing a helmet if he was going to ride a bike" :p

You can guarantee your bike is inside one of the other flats, next to a road cone and half a tonne of pizza boxes.

I totally sympathise, I've had loads of bikes stolen over the years, locked and unlocked. Two were stolen in very similar circumstances to yours, from a communal hallway.

The last one I had stolen was two years ago now, and it was my favourite bike ever. Burst into tears when I got back to where I had left it and found the broken lock on the ground! Luckily I've always been insured, but the replacement (although the same make and model) is not as good as the one I lost (different colour, has front suspension which I am not keen on).

Now if I leave my bike anywhere for any length of time I use a D lock to go through the bike stand, the frame and the back wheel, a long cable lock to go around the front wheel and frame and a saddle lock to stop them going off with the seat!

I use two cable locks (one is an Abus) + a vibration sensitive 105db alarm siren powered on a 9v battery. :D

Surely bolt cutters and a wire cutter will still see your bike gone? :p

Nope, bolt cutters can't get through the Abus shielded cable and the alarm is impossible to remove without it sounding.
I should mention that I don't use the bike for commuting, so when it's locked up it's not far from me and quite often within view.

At home it lives unlocked under the stairs in my hallway, despite me having a garage :o

Without setting it off.... The second you touch it, it sounds for 30s. It can't be removed in that time even with all the will in the world. By which time I would be stamping on yer head with my pedal cleats :p

This makes for very interesting reading, I have always had a fear of getting my bike stolen even though I lock it up. I am in the process of customising it to make it unatractive to thieves. I have painted it bright red, and now I'm about to decorate it with different colours to make it really stand out as an unusual bike, in the hope that someone looking to steal one will pass mine by, as it would draw attention to them if they were riding it, the last thing they want. I hope my cunning trick works.
