Cheapest broadband only wanted, but realise i have to take a phone line too.

so assuming i will never make any phone calls

(quoted speeds average out at 2mb, but BT quote upto 5.5mb)
Given this no need for an unlimited package!)

BT
Line rental £13.60
BB £16
10gb
18 month contract:eek: (but gives free line connection)
Talk Talk
Line Rental £12.30
BB £6.99 (but only £3.49 for 9 months)
£80 line connection

Sky £21 for phone and BB + connection fee (hung up before i got to that one!)

So on the whole TalkTalk seem the best but what do you think?
Can get £24 cashback with them too.

I'd start with an exchange search on https://www.samknows.com
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Cant see why more people are not going with plusnet Ive found them great and are really bt anyway :)

current deal is 3 free months broadband then from 6.49 a month if you need it is 11.49 month phone .

no contract if you pay for router , 12 months if not you just need an existing member to refer you or give you their details :)

obviously if going for the free months you may as well have biggest internet package and then reduce after free months if smaller package suits

The £6.49 Plusnet price only applies if you are on a Market 3 exchange.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Everybody except BT want to charge a fee to re-connect the line.
So when this is factored in, BT works out marginally Cheaper ( for the first contract)
Once i've got the BT line, then i can shop around.

    From Sam Knows

According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support
    up to 0.5Mbps via ADSL
1.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
    2Mbps or greater via ADSL2+

  • I beleive that if you have a BT line fitted, you have to contract with them (line rental) for 12 months... that's what they told me anyway :) It does save the £120 fee though

    It's 18 month contract now.

Customer Service comments have put me off Talk Talk.

OK, but the purpose of the samknows search was to see what LLU providers are available on your exchange-you haven't supplied that info, which is bottom right on the results page (look for 'LLU operator presence').

Because Plusnet have heavy traffic shaping. They advertise an 'up to 20Mbps' connection, but what they don't tell you upfront is that they'll limit your download speed to as low as 50Kbps at certain times during the day. http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/download_speeds.shtml

If I've paid for a service with 10GB usage at peak time, I don't see why I should have my internet connection throttled as well. For this reason, I've gone with ADSL24.co.uk who do not throttle at all.
