I bought a dash camera and it's one of the best investments I have made for my car. There are cheaper alternatives to the RoadHawk as well.
The one I bought cost me £74 in total, including delivery to the UK from Hong Kong. It doesn't have all the fancy GPS and software that the RoadHawk has. However, it still produces better video quality than the RoadHawk - enough to identify numberplates most of the time and certainly enough to use as evidence.
There is another camera available for around £150 which is very similar to the RoadHawk but has vastly superior image quality (it actually records in 1080p high definition and can easily capture number plates, etc!) and has all the fancy GPS, speed display, etc.
Anyway, here is a sample of my camera in action. This van stopped for no reason and started rolling back towards my car without his reverse lights on. If he had hit me he probably would have claimed that I drove into the back of him.

They're well worth every penny.0
