Jobcentres going online?

It comes to my ears via a reliable source (someone at the jobcentre) that my local job centre could be shutting near the end of the year with all the staff being made redundant and everything being done online instead.
Anyone know anything more? Is the government planning on closing all jobcentres in the country to save a few pounds while at the same time making all the current staff unemployed and adding to the ever increasing jobless?

I deal with the Jobcentre through my job and was told before xmas that they are putting more things on-line (just before xmas they put on rapid JSA reclaims). This is so they can make at least 14,000 redundant and more to come if the on-line facility is a success!0

so all those smug gits that look down upon you are now joining the ranks of the unemployed, sympathy after what I experienced, nah......0

Surely that won't include the sign on experience though? I mean I would love never having to set foot in there again but wouldn't it just lead to more benefit fraud and problems with payments?0

we can but hope, they are completely useless

Half the workers stand around chatting and the other half are no help whatsoever..0 -
A lot of the signing desk people are under notice of redundancy already.0

But what about the members of the population who don't have a computer or with mobility issues?0

What about people who are physically unable to access the internet, for example people with sight problems. Or those who don't have the funds to pay for it.
Probably suggest they site a terminal in the local pub in the same way they tried with post offices when trying to shut all them down.0 -

Good point. I know my mum relies on me for anything that can only be done online due to not having her own computer.
Though it was a failed attempt at an election winner Labour's policy of providing computers to those on low incomes was obviously in preparation for life becoming organised online.0
