There's an "Asian WWE" under the 1.66 on the XDA link.
You could try that. It might sort out some of hte bugs you've been experiencing.
OK, so this is what I'm faced with now.......trying to put 3.14 WWE on something that was originally configured as south east asia (AsianWWE).......any suggestions?

Who did you buy the phone from? It's quite likely that the phone serial number is locked to your original airtime provider for ROM updates (which is why you get the "invalid vendor ID" message). Meaning that even though your phone might be sim-unlocked, for updating the ROM you need to use the 'official' ROM from that specific provider and you can't install a generic one from HTC. You could go back to XDA devs (probably my favourite site :D) and read up on HSPL so that you can flash a ROM from any source (HTC generic or the incredibly good custom ones from XDA) or have a look on your airtime provider's website and download the correct ROM from there. My recommendation would be to go the HSPL > custom ROM route - your phone can do things it didn't know it could (including dual-boot WinMo and Android)...

Edit: been using custom ROMs and other goodies from XDA on my phones for years :). Oh and the 'reset' button is not a hard reset, it's a soft reset (like pulling the battery out); a hard reset uses a combination of keys and wipes everything on your phone (equivalent to a "factory reset")

Edit 2: actually, all the ROM specific to various airtime providers are available on the HTC UK site (you can tell I never go on there!) so if you don't want to HSPL, just pick the right ROM from the list: http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=297&act=sd&cat=2
