Erm, if you're visiting family wouldn't you most often be invited to stay for dinner in the evenings?

This would be a good solution even if its just to use a hob to heat up something you've bought.

otherwise, fall in love with the picnic. Sandwiches aren't fun, but a nice cheese and some nice bread and fruit is a simple but delicious supper. Especially with a small glass of wine. Same things, but thought about differently.

For 8 days, I wouldn't be above taking my microwave and mini fridge with me if I thought I could sneak them into the room (cleaners won't care, but reception/management might!)... after all it's not your electricity you're using!

Sorry, but that is really going over the top. why not just go camping in a field with an electric hook up, and save the price of the hotel too.

I can understand it up to a point but !!!!!! you are going on holiday,
Your supposed to be enjoying yourslelves.
If you cant afford to eat out even evening meals I would cut the holiday down to 5 days and spend what you would have done on the three days on eating out and enjoying yourself instead of scrimping and scraping.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

We recently went to a hotel and I heated hot dog sausages with water from the kettle and instant mash, instant gravy and tinned peas followed by a trifle. Not massively healthy but filling and after a long drive it was just what we needed. But if you pack a salad and buy a cooked chicken with Hm potato salad and some couscous theres another nice meal. You just need to pack dishes and knives and forks and of course a can opener (if needed) and a couple of plates.

Googlemap all the supermarkets in a 3 mile radius of your hotel, then go to a different one every day for your dinner.

sometimes when I stayin a hotel (work) I'll pop into M&S and get one of those large salads with chicken and bacon or tuna or salmon. Plus a piece of cheesecake and a drink and eat it in my room :)

Second vote here for finding a local, good quality shop like M&S or nice market and stocking up there - buy lovely things -slightly out of your normal budget, and so a treat for your holiday, and put together a picnic; take a blanket and find a lovely local park. I had a fab time in Dublin doing this - one great picnic, watching the passing scene, and also one nice meal out which was actually a rooftop cafe in the M&S on one of the main streets that had a rooftop cafe - we watched the street life, enjoyed a warm meal and glass of wine - all for under a tenner, went for a stroll and then people watched as the city came to life for the evening. Yes, it could have been done even cheaper, but no boiling of hotdogs in kettles was involved, and it felt like a holiday. I also made a point of buying myself delicious things for breakfast - as long as it came in under the £12 the hotel was charging for a pretty mediocre affair, it was a winner! Then back to the room for a glass of white wine (don't forget to take a corkscrew), a read of my book and it was all in all a relaxing, fantastic holiday, with no overdraft at the end of it!!

When I am staying at a hotel for a week + in the UK I make sure I print out a pile of voucher deals for places to eat firstly. I also joine Hi-Life diners using my Tesco Clubcard points which gets you 50% off lots of places to eat (you can search their website to find the local recommendation) - they are doing a free trial at the moment too. I also have a Bite Card as well for more discounts.

We don't eat out every night so we head off to Boots, Tesco express, Sainsbury Local etc and but the reduced food. You can get a nice selection of things for very little money. A few months ago (last hotel stay) we got sandwiches, wraps, fruit salads, salad bowls, pasta pots etc for 25p-75p and reduced hot food - chicken jalfrezi (£1) Sausage Rolls, chicken drumsticks (10p-65p). We just grab some napkins and the free plastic cutlery and head back to the hotel for a cheap feast. You just need to time it right :D

    Hi everybody.

I'm just after a little bit of inspiration.

My husband and I will be visiting family in a couple of weeks and will be stopping at hotels for 8 of the nights we're up there (all bargain prices, thanks to MSE!)

We'd like to try to make the trip as cheap as we possibly can, of course, but we're wondering how we'll cope with evening meals at the hotels. We don't want to eat out every night and can't afford to do this, but at the same time we don't want to be eating sandwiches for dinner! There's no fridge in the rooms.

Making things earlier in the day for later at the hotel would be a possibility, as we will have access to parents' kitchens on most of the days I guess.

    Any ideas or experience?!

    Thanks in advance xx

Can't family be tempted to give you dinner or high tea some nights? If my family was coming to see me, I wouldn't expect them to be eating out or scavenging and eating in a hotel room.

  • Oats so Simple is currently on offer in asda which solves breakfast. i stay in hotels a lot for work and if I don't fancy eating out (despite work paying sometimes you just don't fancy it). I agree with google where the nearest supermarkets are. M&S are lovely, also deli counters are great and you could always do something "tapas" style. Also google search you general area who knows what may be local. On one work trip we had a very well known and locally famous chippy nearby. Not health but they were gorgeous and better than hotel food!
