Staying in hotels for few nights - suggestions for evening meals?

Hi everybody.
I'm just after a little bit of inspiration.
My husband and I will be visiting family in a couple of weeks and will be stopping at hotels for 8 of the nights we're up there (all bargain prices, thanks to MSE!)
We'd like to try to make the trip as cheap as we possibly can, of course, but we're wondering how we'll cope with evening meals at the hotels. We don't want to eat out every night and can't afford to do this, but at the same time we don't want to be eating sandwiches for dinner! There's no fridge in the rooms.
Making things earlier in the day for later at the hotel would be a possibility, as we will have access to parents' kitchens on most of the days I guess.
Any ideas or experience?!
Thanks in advance xx

Sounds like salads and cooked things which you can eat cold might be the order of the day. I wouldn't mind cold pizza or omelette/frittata but cold lasagna wouldn't appeal at all. if there's a kettle in your room to make tea you could always make some couscous. Those Aynsley Harriott ones aren't bad.
Erm, if you're visiting family wouldn't you most often be invited to stay for dinner in the evenings?0 -
Not the most interesting, but certainly cheap.... Pot noodle or batchelors pasta pots (4 for £3 at Tesco atm)0

Depending how urban an area you are going to, you could always use some of the 2 for 1 vouchers on the forum for restaurants?
Not really cheap but less than eating out properly and better than sitting in your room! Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0 -
ooh,i'm nicking that idea for when me and DS go away to B&B.
thanks.
I have always taken 2 or 3 '3 minute noodles', the 10p ones, and my own curry powder, gravy granules and pepper mix; in a plastic tub. Same thing for 25/35p a pop. And better tasting IMHO as you can add your own spices to the mixIf you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Take a thermos for soup, you can heat it up while visting then have it in your room with some nice chunky granary bread. Remember to take bowls aswell though!Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

You usually have a fridge in a hotel room so I would take some salad, make some cheese straws, sausage rolls, quiche, HM pasties etc and take a small pot of mayonnaise/dressing.
Take some Ham or chicken as well and I would also make some cakes/puddings for a treat.
River Cottage have a recipe for HM pot noodles you can find it on 4od.
Don't forget to take plates, bowls and cutlery, some washing up liquid and a couple of tea towels tooBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

If there is a supermarket nearby check and see if they have a hot food counter-our local Tesco sells hot cooked chickens which would be nice with bread and salad.
Take a small sharp knife and a chopping board. We keep a small plastic board and a knife in our picnic basket along with plastic plates, napkins, glasses, sachets of salt and pepper and a corkscrew . I always take it with.us when we stay in Travel inns.
We often find that after a days sightseeing we are just too tired to sit through a restaurant meal so will often have lunch out and then a picnic type meal with a bottle of wine in our room in the evening.0 -

I've taken an electric coolbox to hotels previously, ostensibly because I have soya milk which once opened needs to be kept cold but we then use it for keeping ham, salad, cheese etc. to have for lunches whilst we're out and about, you could use it for salad, chilled things for the evening as well.Piglet
