Saddle Thrombosis (embolism in cats)

My beautiful cat has been struck down with paralysis on the back legs.
The odds arent great and most cats do not recover (from what I have read online) - does anyone have any experience?
The vet is giving him 24 hours on pain killers and aspirin to thin the blood and move the clot.
I am devastated.

Thanks - I am sitting here thinking he should just have been pts rather than trying treatment that is unlikely to help x0

im very sorry to hear about the awful situation u and ur poor old kitty is in. i know exactly how u feel as unfortunately my cat had this a year ago january. he didnt make it and i couldnt stand seeing him in pain, so opt for pts. being a veterinary nurse myself didnt help the situation either.
hope you kitty does feels more comfortable and better overnight0 -
Hi
I am so sorry as I know what you are going through.
My favourite cat I have ever known had this happen to him and at the time he was under treatment for having fluid around his lungs and was suspected of having thyroid problems.
We were told at the vets that we could try him on asprin but the chances of it working were slim and as the poor baby was so distressed and with his other health issues we decided to have him pts. Even thinking about it now has me in tears.
I really hope that it works for your cat.0 -
Poor baby, you must be frantic with worry. Is it def a clot? This can also be a sympton of heart failure - also very serious obviously.
Always worth a shot to try and save your pet, it's when it becomes prolonged/suffering you have to make the decisions. You can at least then know you tried. Every case is different and miracles DO happen because I have seen them in pets, but if it doesn't for you then this world wasn't for him.Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!

I was Googling, trying to find answers to what the vet has been saying about my cat when I happened to come across this post....
My big daft male cat Murphy was struck down with this condition on Monday morning.
The vet has been pumping him full of steroids and blood thinners since then.
The main worry is that he can not go for a pee due to the nerve damage and they had to stick a needle in, in order for him to go....if the damage can not be reversed then I have been told that he will have to be destroyed....
He is only a baby compared to the other cats that I have had and lost....he is about 7 years old.
I have told the vet to try anything and everything, PLEASE....as I love him soooooooo much, and that money is not an issue as he is fully covered by insurance.
I have been sobbing my heart out and screaming out loud as this is the last thing that I needed to go wrong as my mum is end stage breast cancer....
Why is life so cruel?

Im so sorry for you. I think my cat died of this last year. She starting walking round and round in circles like she couldnt see, she then collapsed and started panting. We took her to an emergency vet who quite frankly were absolutely useless and wanted me to take her next day to my own vet whilst she was so ill and panting, struggling to breath next to me in the car, its a miracle i didnt crash as i was crying and panicking as i was driving to the vet. the emergency vets only had her on sedatives overnight rather than thinners, as i said to her i think she is having a stroke/clot whatever.
so then my vet put her straight on thinners and in an oxygen mask thing. she seemed to rally but then died peacefully. in my head, i feel that if she had thinners right from the start she would have survived. of course my own vet couldnt say whether this would have definately worked or not, but i feel it would have.
i hope it works out for you0 -

Puddy you mustn't beat yourself up over this. The panting is also a sympton of other diseases one of them being heart failure - the vet may also have suspected this as you say they put her on oxygen as this is also part of the treatment of that. It would have been very serious with potentially the same outcome. Unless your vet has all the right equipment (they never do as it's so expensive) so as ultrasound etc, they can't properly diagnose, in my opinion. When pets get ill they hide it untill they are really seriously ill.:(

Life is cruel but then the immense love we get from our pets and loved ones means that there is immense pain when they go.
Ginger is still with us - just. He has been on pain relief and aspirin for 2 days now and has regained bowel control and is eating (although he is a fat cat so I dont see the eating as anything more than his usual "im a greedy animal" routine).
The vet rang yesterday to say she wanted to give him another 24 hours as she though that these signs were encouraging and that he was in no pain.
We have consented to this and are now waiting for the phone to ring. Unless he is making more obvious progress (he is still paralysed in his legs) he will be pts today. OH wants us to go and be with him when this happens - which we have done before with our previous cat but I dont know if my heart could take it again. I am typing this with tears running down my face as I know that there will not be any good news today and I cant keep putting the inevitable off. I asked if he should be pts when it happened but OH wants him to have every chance he can. The internet reading is soooo negative it will take a miracle for him to pull through. And miracles dont happen for the likes of me.0 -
And the miracle didnt happen - we have just had a call from the vet to say that he died during the night. OH is going round later to say goodbye but I cant do it. My heart is breaking into a million pieces x0
