Baking woes

OK I know this technically isn't an old style tip/recipe/helpful post but I bake - that's old style and I'm fed up.
I went for an audition for the Great British Bake Off last month and didn't get through. My creations were comprehensively dissed by Mary Berry (looked like I'd fed her poison) although Paul Hollywood was nice about my stuff. Anyway - I looked around the room and figured I could pick who would get through to the next round and I was right. They have gone for a gay guy, a straight guy, ethnic minority man/woman, neurotic pretty middle class mum, older woman etc... They had hundreds of people to get through so there were going to be lots of casualties but I figure the final 20 or so would fit these categories.
Today I met someone who got through to the final filming, starting in May, and lo and behold she is pretty middle class neurotic mum.. apparently they struggled to find "straight man" this year.
I am fed up that I am not good enough at my social stereotype to get through. My baking is as OK as this other woman but the size of my !!!! and the fact I am a white middle class woman goes against me.... and now I'm fed up with myself for being fed up... I mean how daft am I? I know how this game works I should be immune to this ridiculousness and rise gloriously above it on a pile of my own homebaked, and frankly delicious, cupcakes and macaroons.
Gah!
Thank you for staying with me and listening. Normal service will be resumed shortly.

Your signature says it all!
Well done for entering and I agree with your view that they TV only seem to take on people who 'fit in' to the outer catergories.
My OH was part of a team to go onto Eggheads and they weren't picked, but looking at those that do get on, they seem to like the 'odd' ones!0 -
Hi radiohelen,
As your thread has dropped down the board and isn't strictly related to Old Style moneysaving I've moved it over to the Praise, Vent & Warnings board to see if you can get more replies.

Ahhhh, you're mistaking TV for real life. TV lies, it is pathalogically incapable of telling the 'truth', in fact. TV is all about making 'good TV', and that means 'characters' (and 'conflict', depending on the format).
The best you can do is take a deep breath, and enter real competitions not tied to TV shows, as then you may get a real judge without a production team setting the agenda.0 -
Your baking I'm sure is lovely...send me some please! There's winners & unfortunately losers.0

The Great British Bake Off
Or to put it another way, "The eggs factor"
It's no different to Big brother, pap idol, and many other so called "reality" TV shows.
The producers don't want normal people who can communicate without fighting, swearing etc. They are generally looking for oddballs whose on screen antics will get mentioned in the tabloids and get the viewing figures up.0 -
If ever you get a chance read Chart Throb by Ben Elton........I guarantee you'll never be able to watch X Factor again.
When the bbc sponsered advert that was some where over the rainbow was on, I wondered why they even bothered to have a coloured girl as a contestant when she had zero chance of winning.2014 Target;

Why?? I found the post perfectly reasonable and light hearted.
For heavens sake - give it a rest....“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
