Where's that from? (Both the question and answer.)

I'm assuming you'd just opened the account with Halifax - they wouldn't be on your reports so soon Shirley?

No the account isn't, but TEN credit searches by HBOS are! In conjunction with ONE application. (It was 8 when I posted but they've made more since).

HOWEVER... I received a letter today which states "Unfortunately since writing to you, your application has failed our final checks and we cannot offer you an account".

No freaking shizzle Halifax, if your final check was an unrecorded enquiry made on the 30th December (which it was), you'd have seen nine current account applications on my credit file and suspected I'd fallen victim to fraud.

Not knowing, clearly, that all these footprints were left by YOU.

What a bunch of mother f***ing reporobates. Better get the Envelopes out...

Try getting a mortgage in joint names with a difficult address. At one point there were 13 searches on my file! For one mortgage!

It's illegal plain and simple, it's a breach of data protection.

I suspect there's beeen foul play.

I called them up with my application reference to equire as to the status, Then they say "Yep, you've been approved, you can have this, that, and whatever else, too". Then another couple of searches appear the same day I called.

... So the following day (coincidence?) I receive confirmation of my account number and sort code requesting ID, which I bring in to branch.

Then the same day it appears I've applied for another account - according to my credit file.

I am personally convinved that when I called to check the status of my app, the person taking the call keyed a new app instead - without my instruction or consent. I'm also convinved the bloke in branch keyed yet another app when I dropped in my ID instead of just completing the original app.

I am shouting foul play, the dates tie up, and I suspect the final letter I received today was as a result of them seeing "Hmm, one app online, then one over the phone, then one in branch? Something's going on here. Better close the original account, looks like fraud".

All purely speculation but the searches all tie up date wise and explains the series of events. I'll have 'em...

  • Blimey!! This thread is amazing. Only today I was thinking about looking at various places to get my credit rating and thought that I'd pop on here to seek some advice and found this and I'm really pleased I did!

I don't really need to get one but for some reason I just thought that I'd give it a go and see what turns up, the trouble is I'm now totally confused as to where to go to get an accurate report (I obviously now know where not to go;) ).

So, baring in mind I'm not particularly interested in the score but more interested in what shows up then where do I go? I've never done a credit rating ever before so I haven't got a clue. Could my own bank (LloydsTSB) tell me?

Thanks for any help and sorry for what may appear to be a dumb question.

The same places we're slagging off:

Get the (one-off) £2 statutory reports from (at least) Experian and Equifax (and possibly) CallCredit. (At the time of posting, those links go directly to the Statutory Reports page for each of them.)

What you don't do is pay them any extra to give you 'your credit score,' which is what this thread is about.

They may have 'free trials' - Experian and Equifax do at the moment for example - (for, usually, a month/30 days, then you start paying through the nose.) Feel free to use the free bit, but be sure to cancel well before they start charging you.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

i was closer to 32 i think with my mortgage application with my partner... they declined me anyway :( but as a last ditch attempt my partner applied for the full amount on her own and got the mortgage in her name.

My credit rating is terrible - I was a very bad debtor when I was a student. BUT RBS have given me a lifeline - OD that matched my old BOS account and a credit card. I really don't get the different scoring mechanisms the banks have... and have since given up trying to work it out.

I now just have a mobile phone account and a RBS credit card... and that was through the skin of my teeth!

End of the day - it is really up to the consumer have a good idea of their credit history - magic numbers plucked from the heavens won't help you and only help CRA's make a quick buck.
  • The tall and short of this thread is that the numbers are useless, but the report itself helps you see some of the wood through the trees.

People need better education as to what it all means. I use Noddle (Call Credit) and am signed up for free. They seem to be very useful at the minute, but as always their score of 3/5 means nothing unless i can get credit. Interestingly, i have a mortgage (circa £75k) and credit cards to the total value of 15,300, and all from a gross salary of approx £20k, no savings and a £4000 debt to bank of mum and dad - anyone wanna borrow money from me?
