  • Hi,
I'm 20 and I just started at the University of Sheffield in September. I've been living on my own since I was 16 so I thought when applying for student loans that I would be able to apply for an independent status seeing as I've been self supporting for those 3 years i.e. financially estranged from my parents. Student loans haven't yet rejected my application for this, but they have taken so long to process it (and still say it will take more than a month before they will even have processed the most recent evidence they requested). I have written to the appeal email, the complaints email, I ring them up every other day asking them what to do next, but I get nothing back and they don't seem to realise how urgently I need it.
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks
    Tasha

Hi Tasha, I can't help but didn't want to read and run, I ve been self supporting for 4 years and they have decided I'm only entitled to the depentants amount because I was on a low wage in 08/09, I am of course appealing but it's stressing me out! I hope you have better luck and get it sorted soon!
    Sarah.

    Sorry to hijack your thread,

I have a query, 3 yrs ago my mother died, our son was at Uni, the resulting termoil he failed his exams and they chucked himout.

A year later he thinks I start again, with a local Uni.

Student Finance said what happened before, write a letter to explain and send Death cert to prove same.

Did that, but they haven't sent the Death cert back, after 2 yrs.

I've asked nicely, people have said we have it, write a request for it back. Done that, no joy, it upsets me having to explain the circumstances over and over, to someone who really can't be bothered.

What can I do to get the cert back, it has personal info on it afterall ?

it might be worth posting on the thread that's a sticky at the top of the board - the 'Help with Student loans' one. some people with lots of knowledge check that regularly to offer help.

sounds very difficult and unnecessary to me for them to do this - although i'm sure it's down to incompetence and not malice......

Yeah, maybe not a good idea to hijack a thread that is an ongoing problem, unless you're trying to contribute to resolving that.
