Slightly off topic but i think royal mail has completely over complicated their postage. They should have flat rates like in the US so everyone
automatically knows what something is going to cost. Weighing and measuring envelope sizes to calculate prices is ridiculous imo.

I am sorry for OP's situation. But no, it is only your own fault. Why there must be someone to blame?

To cut the story short, I did post some documents by 1st class on the 10-02-11. Yesterday I received an envelope from royal mail, which has got my post in it. All it says is that my post hasnt been delivered because I didnt put the correct postage stamps ( I fell short by 10 pence !!!).well thats your fault Now i need to pay them 1.10 in total (£1 handling fee).
The big envelope they sent to me itself costs atleast 40p. so RM lost money on the deal either way
Because of this delay of nearly 7 weeks, i am at loss of £575 as my documentation didnt reach the destination intime. well pay the postage when you send stuff, not rocket science
Really frustrated. Why did they take 7 wks to send the post back to me? because the recipient gets 3 weeks to collect any charge items. charge items are removed from the mail stream and as such take longer to travel and who is responsible for my loss ??
Is there anything I can do?

so in short, you underpaid but still expect items to be treated as something special just because its you

I thought that the recipients usually got a card through their door telling them they have a letter to pick up, and the fee they were due. I've never heard of them going back to the sender. Could the recipient have just not bothered to pick the letter up from the sorting office?

what do you think happens after its not been collected?
the OP shouldnt have received their item back
they should have been carded for the underpaid items

I was just wondering what happens. As I said, i've never known it to go back to sender, as anyone i've known who has got a card through the door (including me) have always paid the fee. So I assume whoever they sent the documents to, didn't go pick them up and pay the extra.

    many charges go unpaid
many businesses simply wont pay for charges
we used to have one RBS office who sent all the cards back with "not the banks responsibility" carefully written on every card
so returning charges after 3 weeks is an ongoing process(as charges come in the office 5/6 days a week)

It could well be that the recipient refused/declined to pay the shortfall so it didn't get sent back until after the time period for them to do so had expired.

This is what happens. A card is posted to the recipient asking them to pay.
