Too much protection on my computer?

Hello

I haven't used my desktop for a while and noticed it's quite slow. I had a bad experience with a virus some time ago so as a result seemed to have installed every virus checker/spyware etc on it.

I think it's slowing down my PC, so if someone can tell me what I should uninstall, I'd be grateful.

I have:
AVG ver8.5
Avira AntiVir
Sygate firewall
Spybot
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
Spyware Doctor
Super AntiSpyware
LavaSoft.

Thank you.

You should only have one antivirus programme running on your PC.
IIWY, I'd use MSE or Avast, Malwarebytes and Ccleaner and remove the rest using the appropriate tool if necessary.
Then maybe do a defrag and check your startup programmes.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    SuperAnti Spyware and a decent AV/Firewall .

Your PC resources look to be 5% for using and 95% for protection .

the affectation would also depend on your computer spec/ I use : Avast (free ) + Mbam (paid for ) + NoScript + Windows firewall / just some other other security FF addons too but I also use the awesome Opera 11 ///

Uninstall all of them, then stick the free versions of avast and malwarebytes on, and use windows firewall

In particular, you should not be using AVG and Avira at the same time. Also, if you're running active scans with products like Spybot ("teatimer"), this will significantly slow your machine.

Avast OR MSE+Windows firewall+Malwarebytes is really all you need.

Sygate is a good firewall and useful if you're running XP, but unnecessary with Vista or Windows 7. Spybot, run without teatimer and regularly updated will give you an effective Hosts file. Also, be sure to run a good ad-blocker in your browser - rogue ads are a real source of danger, besides being damned annoying.

AVG ver8.5 > remove with AVG removal tool, then check with Appremover to confirm it is gone
Avira AntiVir > an excellent antivirus, can leave on, or remove with Appremover if you want Avast for the extra web guard
Sygate firewall > remove using Revo Uninstaller
Spybot > turn off Teatimer & SDHelper, but the program itself won't cause problems at all so leave on
Spyware Blaster > this won't slow your computer down either so leave, it is just the passive hosts/trusted zones protections
Spyware Guard > remove with Revo Uninstaller
Spyware Doctor > remove with Revo Uninstaller
Super AntiSpyware > leave on if you keep Avira, but remove if you are going to use Avast
    LavaSoft > remove using Appremover

If you've already uninstalled everything, then I would use Appremover and run it to "check for failed uninstall" to make sure some of these have gone completely as remnants all too commonly are left behind.

I wouldn't use the "immunise" from Spybot at the same time as the protections from Spyware Blaster as they are the same method, and you'll end up with a large host file. If you've done this, then I'd undo the Spyware Blaster protections and just stick with Spybot's immunisations.

Definitely remove SYGATE. Its ancient and no longer supported. Hackers could bypass it in seconds

Can anyone recommend an ad blocker for IE8 please?

It's not just Sygate that can be broken, more than a couple of the software based firewalls out there can be broken in seconds with the help of Google.
