Why wait 6 months??? If the original application has not shown up on your credit file, try again once you get the current account, if it is knocked back, then wait 6 months. ;)

But make sure that after the new account is setup that you wait at least a month. This is because the Natwest systems need to update that you no longer had a Step account and now have a full current account.

These systems only update once per month, so if you apply before the update - it'll get declined as the Step account will still be showing as active (and a Step account will automatically stop you getting any credit lines at all with Natwest, no matter how good your credit).

I speak from recent personal experience and my info is from a member of staff.

Yep agree with Silvafox. Having a Step Account, means auto decline for any credit products with Natwest (except a full current account). Personally, I would allow the Current Plus account to run for at least 6 months, then apply for a credit card
Debt free and staying that way!

This is normal for people with step accounts, they will always decline credit. Open a current plus then apply apply in 6 months after closing the step down.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Thanks guys.
It kinda makes sense, but still don't understand why would they automatically decline credit applications for Step account holders.
Its a basic bank account, not bad-people-account.
    Anyway...

Do you know if Natwest pre-approves anything?

And also, do you know if this new account I opened, Advantage Gold, would be looked at as continuing banking with Natwest, kinda like upgrade from Step to Adv.Gold, or they would treat it as if I came from some other bank?
I think that would determine if I should wait longer or shorter time before applying.

Already opened a full bank account, but now that you mentioned, should I close Step account?
Would it hurt if I kept it for some direct debits and stuff already set up there?
By hurt, I mean Natwest not looking favorably that I still am a "seep-account-holder"

I was in same boat. Kept getting declined for cc even though I had step account with Natwest for 3 years and salary paid into monthly.

In Jan 2011, my branch manager advised me to upgrade my step account to current account so I could then be eligible for loans, overdrafts and credit cards. And I took her advice.

Also she suggested that I should switch all direct debits to current account and have my salary paid in to as this will improve my internal score. Also she advised to have savings account with money going in through standing order.

I have done exactly that and I am going to apply for credit card in July 2011 to let my account run for atleast 6 months. Also I have never been on electoral roll so that might be one of the many reasons. But my council should be able to put me on electoral register from May.

Yes they do, but you will need to speak to the bank as this kind of information isn't accessible to customers. They will tell you though.

Continued - your banking relationship hasn't changed, but I'd still wait 3-6 months as advised before applying anything.

I've seen basic accounts holding customers back. If you don't need it, I'd close it in a few months time. I say this because you may require recent statements for something in the very near future.

If you want to keep it however, I'd upgrade it to a Current Plus account, which is a full and free current account.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

When we first went to Natwest we were offered the advantage gold account and were advised by the branch manager to apply for their credit card at the same time, which we did and were accepted for. We had come from a basic Halifax account.
