Honeymoon in Mexico!!

Hi all :)

We're getting married in May and have always talked about going to Mexico for our honeymoon. OH has always been wary of the longer flight (furthest we've been is Greece/Turkey), but he seems to be ok about it as it's for our honeymoon!

So, was just wondering where people had been and where you all would recommend? Our friends said the Moon Palace Spa Resort in Cancun was the best hotel/holiday they've been to, and it looks wonderful so was thinking of maybe going there?

Budget would be around £3000-£3500 for both of us, would like 2 weeks AI!

Any ideas?

The Moon Palace is a fantastic hotel, but it seems that most tour companies are not going there at the moment. The only problem with it is that you are out of the way. Most of the hotels are good in Cancun. The staff are paid very little and work hard for tips. With your budget, wherever you choose you will have a fantastic time.

I got back from honeymoon in November. We stopped at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen and it was amazing. You can use the facilities in all the Riu if you stop in a palace except eveneing meal.

Playa del Carmen is not as manic as Cancun I was told. You can also access the Island of Cozumel from there easily which is really nice and had the best Fajita next to the ferry port.

Depending on your age you may be better with Playa del Carmen. There are six Riu in the area and you can also use the ones in Cancun but I never ventured that far. The hotels are in Playacar which is tiny walk into town.

We honeymooned in Mexico in January. We went with First Choice/ Thomson and stayed at El Dorado Royale which was an amazing place. Never had such luxury - they are catering for visitors from the States which means standards are very high! There are loads of all inclusive hotels to choose from.
We liked the position of our hotel on the Riviera Maya, quiet but with access to Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, plus day trips to the Mayan sites. Someone recommended Xel-Ha water park as a day trip to us, it was a highlight of our holiday, fantastic snorkelling.
Have a wonderful wedding & fun honeymoon!

dreams resort in tulum is lovely, but not much around there but playa del carmen is really nice

the thing about cancun is that it does attract a lot of the american college kids so it's not exactly a romantic area, unless you are going to just stay in your hotel?

if you do go, then look at going to xel-ha for the day, it's an amazing experience

We went to Playa Del Carmen for our honeymoon and I loved it. It's a very laid back and chilled out resort. There's no high rise hotels, mainly small independent shops, bars and restaurants and the beaches are fabulous.

Cancun is more glitizer and glamorous. It's got the high rise hotels, glitzy shopping malls, and a lot of American chain bars, restaurants and shops. It's busier and nosier and the locals call it the American playground.

I guess it depends on what you want from the holiday and what you want to see in Mexico.
Here I go again on my own....

Another vote for Playa Del Carmen...we went last year in May and stayed at the Sandos Playacar, loved the hotel. The area is great, you can walk into town or get a taxi and theres lots to do, also would recommend getting on a ferry to Cozumel, we hired a scooter for the day and went around the island, also went snorkelling there.

Hope you have a great time

Thanks for all your replies! I really like the sound of Playa Del Carmen, rather than Cancun, as we do just like to chill out and relax.......the Riu Tequila and El Dorado Royale look amazing, the latter looks right up our street! We're actually being really greedy, because we're getting married in Greece, having 2 weeks out there, then coming back for a couple of months and going away again!
But wanted more luxury, money no object kind of thing.
Was thinking of going September time, as getting married in May, don't want to wait too long to go! Is September an 'ok' time to go?]
    Thanks again xx

Another vote for El Dorado and if you can afford it stay in the Casitas as you get extra benefits ie use of four posters on beach, sunbeds round small pools, prebooking your a la carte restaurants etc.
The food is fantastic and 24 hour room service!
This was the only hotel ever where my husband said on the first morning 'I like it here' and for him to express happiness on holiday is a first!
We are hoping to go back to celebrate our 30th anniversary next year poss September.

That El Dorado Casitas looks a-mazing!! That would be the type of thing we're after, will keep that in mind! We're asking for Thomas Cook vouchers for our wedding gift as my friend works there so we will have to book our holiday there and didn't see that hotel on there website......although I know she can sometimes look at other tour operaters too so hopefully that won't be a problem!
