'3' Cold Calling to get me to switch provider?

Just had an interesting visit by someone from the '3' mobile network (he had I.D.) He claimed he was picking up an information pack that we'd had delivered two weeks ago, which of course we had no knowledge of.

He said something about how they owned all the network masts in the area and talked about new data caps and the need to ensure other mobile providers were following them.

This then turned into a discussion about my mobile contract, what services I was getting and how much I paid etc. When I questioned what that info had to do with network masts he instead said something about pricing caps! Then told me I should be getting a much better deal, which is interesting as I'd made up the detail of my 'package' on the spot (it was about twice as generous as my real contract.)

He eventually started talking about 'what would happen next' and how I'd either be released from my contract, bought out or be offered a cheaper deal by my current provider to retain my custom. Straight after saying I'd receive a sim card through the post.

It was at that point that I made sure he understood I wasn't interested in switching, I didn't appreciate the attempt at manipulating me into verbally agreeing something and that I would be staying with my current provider for the remainder of my contract.

He apologised for wasting my time and left!

I'm concerned that other people may not realise it's actually a sales visit and unintentionally agree to something binding, it was certainly underhanded to talk about an information pack and then subtly switch to moving over to the 3 network - all without overtly saying it.

This was in the Manchester area and a neighbour says he'd been knocking on every door on and off all day long.

Bad form 3!

Have you considered that it might not have been 3 but a third party trying to shift you to the 3 network for commission and 3 knows nothing of this person's deceit?

    Just a thought.

This is bunk of the first order -
    Bad form 3!

I'm not sure what this guy was upto but I'll be amazed if he really works for Three as they as far as I'm aware they don't employ hawkers. Might be a confidence trick in an attempt to gain entrance, that or some third party reseller lying to you.
  • Indeed, no doubt the mysterious information pack was just a ruse to get people talking and his story about the masts didn't ring true at all.

I'm used to these third parties calling during contract renewal periods to try and get me to switch, never had one physically knock on the door before.

Probably wasn't getting anywhere with his Electricity & Gas switching round and decided to diversify !

Not a chance he was from 3, they haven't resorted to door to door sales... yet.
It's either a new take on 'slamming' with them turning up at your door and spinning you a false story, you end up being sold a 3 contract by a 3rd party dealer and they get commission.
    Or
It's a new take on 'phishing' because most people are wise to the e-mails that they get nowdays.

Avoid, if they come back, do some slamming of your own - with your front door.

Quite a few of these self employed doorknockers doing the rounds eg http://www.simplyhired.co.uk/a/jobs/list/q-door+to+door+mobile+phones+sales+advisers+also+teams/l-Glasgow,+Glasgow+City+G1

They are not working for 3 directly, they normally work for dealers.

Beware of tricks to get your signature like, please sign this to confirm

    1. To my boss that that i have been working in your area !

    2. Your not interested in our offer !

If you’re suspicious, you could ask the salesman if you can take their photograph – on your mobile phone, for example? If there genuine they won’t normally mind.:D
