help MIL coming for tea

hi i have been a lurker for many years reading and using your fantastic tips but now my hubby has invited my MIL for tea tommo have nothing in the house but could stretch to spending somthing. what can i cook that she wont trhink oh my god what does she feed my son and grandsons please help :A:rotfl::j:beer::T:eek:

    Cook something which your boys love, what's their favourite dinner? If you cook something they love
    A. You will have cooked it loads of times before and you'll know it like the back of your hand, even if it's something fairly basic like shepherds pie, she can't expect a slap up dinner mid week!
    B. If they love it they'll be enthusing about it, clearing their plates and she'll pick up on their happy ques and follow suit.
    C. If you do knock up a posh dinner your LO is bound to pipe up about never normally eating such posh food and she'll think you've made a huge effort and you normally eat rubbish.
    D. But do knock up a proper pud that way it is acknowledged that it's not just a normal mid week meal, you've done a pud because Granny has come for tea and she loves apple crumble or whatever you do.

    Sorry, I know that's not a recipe idea but I always feel you should cook what you enjoy eating for guests, time is better spent with them than slaving over a hot stove. Think simple.

    I had a friend round for mid-week tea last week and I knocked up abatch of cheese scones to start with (unusual I know but their favourites so spoiling them for 15 minutes worth of effort) spinach and feta filo pie (prepared the night before, 20 mins worth of effort if that, then bunged in the oven on the night) with new potatoes and salad followed by a bought cup cake from the cupcake shop which had opened round the corner that morning (friend isn't big on puddings). She felt really spoilt and well fed but with very minimal effort (would have knoacked up a lemon possett if she was a pudding person, again v ery quick but delish).

    there fave is bangers and mash with carrot and swede but i know that is not there fave

    i much prefer the packet mix of sausage casarole tho it is yummy :) altho my mil would turn her nose up at the concept of it, you shud have seen her face when oh told her he'd had sausage casarole for tea :rotfl:but then to her all casaroles involve meat,gravy, carrots and onions lol

    i would suggest a nice square meal, maybe a roast of a beef casarole with mash and some veg, with gravy and a yummy pudding maybe a no bake cheesecake or banoffee pie :)

    Toad in the hole or spag bol or lasagne...salad...garlic bread

    Some sort of casserole with dumplings and rice or mashed potato

    Roast chicken, veg and roast potatoes

    Sounds like the kids fave is a winner. Just serve it with a lush onion gravy. Fry your onions in a bit of balsamic vinegar and sugar until caramalised VERY WELL (think brown but not burnt!). Add a tablespoon or so of flour and fry gently for a few more minutes. Stir in a spoonful of mustard. Add stock and allow to thicken, stirring all the time. Mm mm.

    If your lot love sausage and mash I'd do that with extra veg and some yorkshire puds, I'm a MIL and I'd appreciate anything that someone else cooked for me, even beans on toast!!

  • Made tea for my MIL this Sunday based on Betty's high tea - three sandwiches each, crusts cut off darling, and then loads of cakes - Viennese Whirls, chocolate ginger biscuits, party rings, made a fruit cake, made iced buns and DS did the Krispie cakes with an easter egg on top. Everyone ate loads and apparently it was the best spread they'd seen in a long time. It didn't cost much and it didn't take long to put together.

    Lol.. was I was going to suggest you tenderise her well these old birds are a bit chewy otherwise and serve with spring veg and gravy...
