the last 4 months have been awful. My husband had no income in january/february and just £150.00 in March. The other two months was covered by my mother in law to keep us afloat.:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0 -

Was the business doing well previously, is there any future in it? If not may be better off to wrap things up as benefit top ups are on the way out as they have been abused too much in the past by self employed.:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)0 -

We have had many conversations regarding our situation over the last couple of months as this years income is much lower than last year. Don't want to tap the mother in law too much either, although she is as good as gold. The plan is for myself to do evening work, which I have wanted to do for a couple of years now and my hubby to do work in the day. Kids are getting slightly older now although our youngest is a concern. ( That is enother story for another time ).:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0 -
I haven't read anywhere that WTC are on the way out. There have been several discussions here and elsewhere about how they are to be changed slightly.
Meaning that if you work say 30 hours self employed then the HMRC expect you to do 30 hours at NMW at least and assess you according to that.
If you truly struggle and make less then it is set to be a bit tougher in the coming few years.
It seems(and rightly) that they aim to stop the huge increase in Avon/Ebay type start-ups who claim very little and don't wish to build their business simply in order to claim as much as they can.
If you do a search on here you will find out more and also the link to the gov white paper detailing info.0 -
Yes all goverment system that deal with 'tax' are down today and possible tomorrow as well, the calculator online if it is down means it is getting replaced.
The new tax credits rules are being brought into force and as a result a new calculator is required - once this is back up it will give you a more accurate estimate of your entitlement ... if you did it just now you may set yourself up for disappointment if you are awarded much less for 2011/20120 -
thanks guys for all the information.
much appreciated.

There was nothing rude about anything you said..some people just can't wait to jump on something a small as that..clearly nothing better to do. You have nothing to apologise for

So many of my friends quickly twigged on that they were significantly better off declaring themselves as self employed, working 30 hours a week and earning £0, it meant they still got housing benefit, got to keep their CSA money (instead of just £10 they let you have on benefits), were council tax exempt AND got to palm the baby off on a nursery 9-5 each day for just a 15% contribution! Its like being on benefits, only you ahve mnore money and you dont have to look after your kids!0

Here is a link to a discussion on how the introduction of the Universal Credit system may affect the self-employed who have come to rely on tax credits to top up their low or no profit enterprises, the proposal to treat the SE as if the earn the NMW
