ok so far today Iv rang social services who dont fund funerals end of... ssafa who said the army dont help with funerals and the local councils municipal funeral service,,,,which is a nominated firm that does cheaper funerals but who STILL need the deposit and the total bill would still come to £2000 without flowers through them and the DSS dont pay that much out regardless so still nothing:(

Rodeo - you need to contact your local health authority or council AGAIN - this information is taken from direct.gov
there is a responsibility for them to pay funeral costs when there is no alternative- as long as the funeral is not already arranged - you should visit the direct.gov site - print this out and then GO to your local council offices with the print out and ask them why they aren't willing to help.

If you can't get other help

If no one is able or willing to arrange and pay for the funeral, the local council (or in some cases the health authority) may do so, but only where the funeral has not already been arranged. The local council may also make a claim on the deceased's estate to pay for the funeral.

Social Sercurity can help if there's no other option - but you will have no say in arranging the funeral at all. This would be after exhausting JCP etc.

Do you not mean social services?
As Social security is the DWP.

I have to say this is why I havent been to any funeral directors and instructed them as I know once I start this process then theres no turning back and Im liable for payment and if the only option is the above then I have to wait I guess and see wether the hospital contact me as Im unsure of how long they keep the body before they expect it to be taken by an undertaker,,,,,, no estate to claim from either
  • Bad, you have all this stress on top of your grieving. Wish I could help. Hope you find a way.

    Living and loving it :)

well I think that the name is a little outdated - but yes, years ago thats what it would have been classed as - in essence I believe it means that the family are given the information about where and when the funeral will be held - often there will be several funerals on the same date for people with no assets - but it is a PROPER funeral
with a minister officiating and the person is buried in a proper grave

I know the phrase " paupers funeral" is horrible- but as a civilised ( so called!) society, there is a duty to bury people who have no-one else to do it for them - which seems is the case for poor rodeo

Rodeo and family may not have a choice of coffins, church, cemetary etc- but their loved one WILL be buried properly

Might be worth contacting the hospital because they probably have a contract with a funeral home.

Just be aware that if he does turn out to have any sort of estate the council will pursue you for them.

These may help http://www.facingbereavement.co.uk/FuneralCostAssistance.html and http://www.thewillexpert.co.uk/getting-state-help-with-funeral-costs.html and http://www.thewillexpert.co.uk/MinimisingFuneralCosts.html
