Best Spanish Dictionary?

Options
Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if there are any language students around that could recommend what they think is the best complete Spanish Dictionary (and where's best to get it cheaply of course!) I've read a few reviews that say the Collins complete and unabridged is the best but just thought there may be experts on here who could tell me for sure before I splash out on it (it's just under £20 on Amazon.) Thanks for any advice.

Regards

Michelle

  • hey i have the French and Russian version of the Collins dictionaries. Theyre quite pricey, but usually amazon sometimes do offers, like in summer, for students. It's served my A-level needs and will for uni too! :D Also i think its a good idea to splash out on something like this, because if you go for cheap you wont get the best and you need to be up to date for language (as im sure you know!)
Also for the spanish, a great online one which i use for French (has spanish and italian on also!) is https://www.wordreference.com
    Hope these help :)

Thanks hereistheguy - you're right I definitely don't want to just go for the cheapest on this. I'm looking to get the best at the cheapest price I can!! I think it probably will be the Collins as I've read some more reviews of it and the Oxford one but it seems the Oxford one is very Americanised for some reason. I was just hoping there were some language students on here who could give me an idea from what they use. Thanks for the help - I have the Collins one in French too and it is very good. Will check out that website too :D

The Collins range are considered to be pretty good, depends what your after. Personally I just bought the WHSmith mini one for word translation, which just so happens to be published by Collins and is near enough identical to theirs but was a few £ cheaper.
  • I'd also reccoment the big red series for your verb tables....if you havn't bought one yet, you're going to need one, Spanish verbs, yeowch!!

Hi si1503 - I'm looking for a large complete dictionary so I think Collins probably does fit the bill.

Singlehouseholder - The big red series? Who publishes that? I know the verbs can be a bit of a bore but I think Spanish verbs are easier to learn than French from what I've learned so far! I dread to think what it'd be like trying to learn English verbs as a foreigner - must be a nightmare in comparison!

  • Hi

It's a few years since I was a student but I thought I'd add my penny's worth. I found Collins pretty good as a general dictionary when I was studying and if I ever needed something more technical and didn't have access to more specialised dictionaries at the time I used Eurodicautom.

If you do decide to get it brand new, and littlemissmay too, try using some of the comparison sites to see where it's cheapest. www.bookbrain.co.uk can be good depending on what you're looking for :)

Hi I am doing a postgrad in Spanish now. I bought the Collins one as an undergraduate and wished I had bought the Oxford one. I think that uni´s tend to recommend the Oxford one so if you haven´t already bought one, get the Oxford.
You could try second hand shops or Abebooks or Amazon.

As you progress you might be tempted to get the Maria Molleneaux(not exactly sure of spelling
?) (Spanish / Spanish dictionary that you can put in your computer - DONT! It is terrible. I wasted about seventy pounds on it!

    Hi Hostie,

Thanks for the insight. That's interesting as most reviews I've read say the Oxford is too Americanised and the Collins is the better one (I was pretty much sure it would be between those two for the most comprehensive dictionary.) So you think the Oxford is the better bet then? I think you can get it for around £20 at Amazon which isn't a bad price.

Thanks for the tip about the Maria Molleneaux stuff - any other books, material you can recommend that could help? Thanks.

    Regards

    Michelle
