Meter Registration Service

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me. I recently moved into a new house and have my Gas and Electric with Eon. Got a call this morning from "the meter registration service" saying my meter was unregistered and it was a legal requirement to register it. Rather stupidly I gave them the serial numbers from my meters. They then said they would check for the best deals and ring me back (which they havent).
Is there any way they can switch my reply without my consent using these numbers? They didnt take any other details like bank details etc as I got suspicious and put the phone down.

Yes as it is a deemed contract with all gas and elec suppliers with a cooling off period for a min of 7 days before your current supplier is actually informed (i.e if signed up today 5th April, curreent provider would be advised 13th April once 7 day cooling off period expired). All you can do is contact Eon if you don't want to change and ask them to look out for any activity on the supplies. New properties meters will already be registered, you will probably (but not necessarily) have an Independent Gas Transporter, and meter details should be on their database, you moving in pack shopuld give you all details. If you aks Eonb they will also ensure that the meters are addressed correctly, as you find developers are lazy as meters are initially registered against the plot no, and the developers can be tardy at letting supplier databases know when the site has been allocated the mailing address0

Hi sharpywesley,
Welcome to the forum :hello:
Airmike23 has pretty much hit the nail on the head with that reply, but I just wanted to offer to help if I can.
I will be happy to take a look at your account for you, when a customer changes supplier we receive what’s called a loss notice, so we can check for this.
If they have changed your supply, you should receive something in the post from the new supplier, that should advise you of the cooling off period, this is the time that you can cancel the switch with them.
You can use the email address in my profile page to send your details to, if you any help.
Just shout up if you need me

It unbelievable that these guys are still going.
I've just moved into a new premises to start a business. I had sorted my electricity supplier out on the first day of moving in (with Opus direct). They said they would send me all the details and contract through the post, which is fine. But then:
In the past 4 days I must have had at least 35 calls from various energy brokers; most of them are fine when you tell them you've already have a contract with your chosen energy supplier.
However, Meter Registration Service pretend to be some sort of official body that want to 'register' your meter (and thus pinch away the contract you've already set up and earn a nice commission). A number of people and 'managers' at Meter Registration Service have phoned me at least 25 times in the past few days. They are VERY pushy and won't take "no" for an answer. They will try ANYTHING to get your details; they will even ask you to 'check' your meter number and if it is at the correct address.
I got really fed up and told them it was harassment.
Here's what you MUST do to stop these unscupulous people:
1. Make a note of who you spoke to and what their number is and their address.
2. After you hang up call 1471 to find out their number. (I had an Ipswich number)
3. Phone BT to complain about them and get yourself blocked from marketing calls. It's free.
4. Phone the police and tell them your problem and that you receive nuisance calls from a particular caller; they are very understanding and helpful.
5. Phone Trading Standards and explain your problem with them and that they are misleading you into believing that they are some sort of an 'official' body.
If everyone complains, this will have to stop. Power to the people!0 -
I got a call last week from "EON". Turned out it wasn't them but was put through to the Business Energy Company (a trading name of Sandown Holdings) who apparently were required by law to offer best rates to new businesses. Agreed a deal with OPUS but got suspicious and rang EON. Confirmed it was a scam and rang OPUS. They are investigating but as the first part of the call which was with a woman claiming to be from EON wasn't included on the recording they don't seem to be willing to do anything (although still investigating). Basically saying it is my word against theirs as second part of recording was ok. I agreed with that but said my agreement was on the basis that the first part of the conversation was fraudulent. I was really busy and due to rush out so not thinking clearly - I feel really stupid.
OPUS say that my claim doesn't make sense - so did a search on this website and see that this type of thing is not that unusual.
Any advice or comments would be much appreciated. Not sure of financial implications as I don't know what our electricity usage is going to be but would guess that we will be some hundreds worse off.0
