Looks like from 1st July 2012 TD Direct Investing now rebate trail commission (less a 0.35% platform fee for funds paying trail above 0.5%) so may be worth updating post 3 if this is correct. Incidentally there is no way to search for what trail they receive/rebate as far as I can see.

You have probably seen the discussions that on the current charging structure TD is looking exceptionally good value for passive funds. They don't seem to have any revenue for clean classes so that doesn't look sustainable.

Just had a look at their website. I can't work out their charging which seems to make no sense! Why should funds that rebate part of the AMC be charged a platform fee when those funds that don't rebate are free. Presumably they get part of the AMC to offset their charges (0.25% of the 0.75%?) so does that mean for rebated funds they get paid double? I would have expected it round the other way so trackers get platform charge not managed funds.

As you say it certainly doesnt look sustainable.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I think basically they are trying to kick back trail commission to the investors because RDR says they have to. But they don't want to give up so easily, so if they are giving you 500 of trail kickback on a 100k investment they will grab 350 of it from you on the same day as a charge, and call it a platform fee.

It does seem bizarre that if they were only giving you 250 of trail, they would not try and grab any of it, and where they are not collecting or rebating any trail at all on a 0.2% TER tracker they don't want to charge you a dealing fee or any annual account management fee (unless you have a small portfolio).

As I commented elsewhere, they might seek to extend this 'platform fee' to other investments once they're ready to mix it all up again for the platform review at some point later. Meanwhile, it would be good marketing for them if people switched their whole portfolio to them for low cost access to cheap funds, and ended up earning TD a bunch of these 0.35% trail commission platform fees on other funds, along with dealing fees on shares, ITs and ETFs, and inactivity fees where people had a low value portfolio etc etc.

Commfreefunds are transferring all business to Hunter Barrington and the existing Commfreefunds service will terminate end Dec 2012.

Existing customers transfer to HB on the same terms - 100% trail rebate, 0.2% fee with £60 cap. Not sure what will be on offer from HB for new customers.

Thanks to the people who posted above. I have updated the TD and Commfreefunds entries with the new information. I have also created an entry for TD in post 2 under the "Best Deals in Some Circumstances" as they work out well for people who only have low cost tracker funds in their ISA. I have also added a comment reflecting the point made above questioning whether this will continue indefinitely.

I have decided to postpone the December update until January in case the ISA providers make lots of changes in the run-up to RDR implementation. Of course, if you discover changes before my January update then feel free to post them here and I will update the corresponding entries accordingly.

Edit: I am also adding the HSBC Global Investment Centre ISA to post 2 and a link to SnowMan's Changes ahoy at HSBC GIC thread that I just found!

I want to invest around £250 monthly into one of the Vanguard LifeStrategy trackers. I'm trying to work out who is cheapest!

Is there an easy answer someone can give me to save the bother of comparing (complicated) charges? Thanks.

HL are cheapest for this. £2pm to HL and the usual fund fees to Vanguard. No other costs (at the moment at least, and not accounting for the costs to transfer out to another provider if as and when they change their charges).

If you have a balance of £5,100 on the last business day of May or you have a regular investment ISA, there is no charge at all at TD Direct, so this is cheaper than £24 per fund per year at HL.
