sending texts using 0844 access numbers?

I take it you mean the international calling card numbers where you call an 0844 or 0845 number then are able to make cheap international calls? If so then no you can't send texts by this as when you send a text it has to go through a message centre which if you go into your message settings you will see. Oranges is +447973100973. This basically is to insure that they can bill you correctly for the destination of the text. Changing this number will stop you from sending text as you will not have authority on any other message centre but your networks one.0

There are websites that enable you to send texts cheaply. Several VoIP providers like the Finarea companies or Skype now do them, for prices from about 3 or 5 pence each.
But if you want to send cheap international ones from the phone, take a look at smsBug, vgsmail, Babble and mobiSMS, the last being cheapest at 2 pence each for most destinations. I haven't used any of these myself. They involve a Java client in the phone, and send over wap/gprs which means you'll have a small network data charge as well0
