If anyone is interested, below is the email I sent to Phillip Clarke. I will let you know of the response I get. Fingers Crossed.
Dear Mr Clarke (or colleague to whom this has been given, who can act on behalf of Mr Clarke)
I wanted to bring to your attention the appalling behaviour of one of your store managers at my local Royston Extra. In particular the issue which has caused this is Price Check promise you are currently running. I am happy to put my hands up and admit I have accidentally fallen outside of the terms and conditions, but there is a right way, and a wrong way of dealing with this, and it was most certainly not dealt with correctly.
I have by a margin, exceeded the £100 a month limit. Now, in the terms and conditions it states this limit is £100 per household. I of course would not intentionally exceed this, I don't want to spoil the promotion, but had a different understanding.
You see I made some purchases for myself (as evidenced on my clubcard account) but I also run a 4 day charity event (once a year, as well as a couple of shorter events). We can't afford to pay the staff, but we like to make sure they have ample refreshments, so I also make purchases on behalf of the organisation. My understanding was that as this was on behalf of a second address, this would not in any way be a breach of the terms and conditions.
So, in the last month I have made approximately £2000 of purchases (I realise this is of course a small amount to a big company, but it is large amount to us). I did so with confidence that I was absolutely getting the best price, as in the event that it was cheaper, this would be matched anyway. This saves me a lot of time deciding what to buy where (and has the added bonus of cutting down on petrol).
Now I was advised that I had gone over the limit (and I was of course happy to accept this, as I can't say I was particularly keeping track of vouchers I had used, only how much I had spent.)
I was advised that If I would have no problem using it in April. However, yesterday proved to be a very different story.
The checkout assistant had to call over a supervisor, whom had previously been the one to explain that I could use my voucher in April.
It seems he had a change of heart, and informed me that as I broke the terms and conditions I would never be allowed to use any vouchers, ever. This seemed odd, since it is a price promise, and surely a key part of that is actually being able to do it. There isn't much point in issuing vouchers, if they can never be used.
He showed me a laminated copy of the terms and conditions (which seemed a little whooly to me). I couldn't see that what he was saying was correct, so I asked for verification from a manager.
This is where the aforementioned store manager issue comes into it, and is really the big issue. If she had taken the time to explain the reasoning, in a professional manner, I would have accepted, and gone back to my usual practice of shopping around. She appeared and marched me over toward the customer service desk.
"It's because of you that we changed our terms and conditions" She said. Really? Was I alone the cause of the terms and conditions being revised? She eventually expanded on that statement.
"It's people like you, deliberately abusing the system". There was of course nothing deliberate about this. Now I should explain that early on when I tried to redeem my first voucher this was refused based on the time stamp. I suggested it was down to the time changing to 12 hour time (which you of course know it does). During the conversation when the words "suspicious" and "fraudulent" were thrown about with impunity, I thought it best to get my phone out and record the rest of the conversation.
I'm thick skinned enough that it wasn't particularly bothersome, but I can only imagine how my mother would feel if someone made such slanderous comments against her. I of course complained via your customer service phone line. I offered to provide the audio recording as this should of course help with retraining the store manager in how to talk to people. Sadly I'm told their is a policy that you cannot use audio recordings for such matters. It's a shame but the lady on the phone was nice enough, and I left confident that appropriate action was taken.
It seems action was taken (though the desired effect of an improvement in manners was not achieved), as she suddenly stopped walking, and asked if I was recording the conversation. I informed her that it was well within my right to do so. When the store seem thrown off by minor details such as 12 hour time discrepencies, it helps to have documentation.
She flatly stated that she wouldn't talk to me then, and stormed off with my shopping, leaving me with voucher and cash in hand. I was only on my lunch break so a. didn't have time to redo my shopping, and b. the desire to shop.
So I hope you will now understand my complaint.
A store manager is empowered and trained to deal with any issues which may represent themselves within the store. They understand company policy and can therefore have confidence in what they say. Why is it then that she should be terrified of the prospect that I would like documentation?
She must either have been:
A. Lying, and knowing full well that it was quite unreasonable to take these actions against me.
B. Simply didn't have a clue, and was making it up as she went along.
I have previously worked in this store, and would never have said anything I don't have confidence in, or been afraid to have that on record. As a store manager I expect this to be even more true. As it happens I now work at Sainsburys, but find they have poor special offers, which is my reason for choosing Tesco.
Please can I have your clarification on my future ability to:
A. shop with Tesco
B. Use vouchers, from your price check promotion, or otherwise.
I would also like to know if this was just a bad incident, or if the level of skill in a Tesco manager has declined so much in the last few years. Having a manager who's opinion is final, but won't be quoted on it or be accountable, simply smells like a child saying "because I say so."
Where does that leave the consumer?
The manager in question is named Leslie (I don't know her surname off the top of my head) but in the event that you have 2 with such a name, this one has short drown hair, and has an expression that matched her temperament.
I trust you will give this the appropriate attention, and hope this hasn't spoilt your afternoon (as it has mine).
Kind regards,

If this does work for the DTD it would make it £1.01 for 54 washes if my maths is correct which is a good deal.0 -
I had a supervisor with a bit of an attitude this morning.
She was called over to process my voucher
said " we know what you are up to , and we think you are abusing the offer"
I looked at her , and said "excuse me?"
she said "You are buying only things that are priced cheaper in Asda , then using your coupon to buy similar purchases "
I found this somewhat rude and said,
"Tesco have stated and advertised that you are cheaper than Asda , yet on my last 3 shops I have been overcharged for my items on all 3 shops , I am actually really annoyed at the way I have been over charged , and , in my opinion , instead of being confrontational a more contrite attitude with extra attention to customer service in an attempt to placate me would be your fastest way to avoid this involving customer services, please process my voucher."
which she did.
