Not very easy to get a new supply to an existing property, the pipe work needs to be 750mm deep at least , and it will need to enter the property underground through ducting and be insulated, you will need to do this yourself or employ a builder and take the new service pipe to your boundary.

As for cost depends on where the main is and if it needs a road crossing, if its a narrow road the road may need to be closed or it may need traffic lights etc.etc

You will be looking at least £1k, plus a road closure can cost £600 and lights £300 on top

Surely if the OP has mains water to his house, a supply can be taken from that pipe at the nearest point to the bungalow?(obviously metered)

We also don't know that the existing supply to the bungalow fails to meet existing regulations(depth and entering the house etc).

The statement that it is unauthorized seems to stem from the fact that the OP's unmetered supply is being used to feed, what is in effect, another property rather than an annex.

No it has to be a totally new supply to the mains, well it does round here, you cant tap into an existing supply, in not 100% if its stipulated in the WRAS regs or its a company poilcy

As for the existing supply it may well fail todays regs but that does not matter.

If all the water comes through the existing property the easiest solution is to meter that, so the water co is getting paid for water use in both props, but they would loose one lot of standing charges

Best to to ask for an inspector to pop round and go through the options

nothing is ever simple.. it's got to be resolved, so I'll ring them tomorrow and set the ball in motion I guess. If I get an idea of what's necessary then I can arrange to get other quotes for the groundwork. Ugh. And we don't have the money. So that's going to have to go on a card. Deep joy. Oh, and btw, I'm a girl :)
