I do not put the TV on in the daytime. I sometimes put on Radio 4 but not often. However, we do not have much silence - lots and lots of birdsong which is beautiful and soothing.
Ceridwen how exciting to find a possible new relative:)
....and you've just given me the thought that maybe I could pick her brains with any queries on this....:rotfl:. As 'tis a woman with that surname - then she may well be a "sorta relative by marriage" rather than "by blood" iyswim... (so my interest in this may or may not be "something in the genes" in my family...). But yer never know...
Sorry to hear about your SIL though ((( ))). I guess its easy for the mind to have all sorts of plans as to "what to do next in life" - but then the emotions "shoot down" and its hard sometimes to struggle back on track back to those plans.0 -
Annie56 you may have lost your old friends but you have gained more new ones.
mamaninie I have done this with rolls but not loaves. I will check my bread book later and see if it mentions loaves. You can freeze dough though. I will look up the exact method later too.
So sorry to hear about the lady I hope her family can get some help and comfort.
I love Enid Blyton and introduced all my kids to her. my 11 year old son reads and re reads them. I did not know she wrote stories about families, we got one called "Those dreadful children". About two families, one with carefully brought up children and one with a chaotic household. The story is about what happens when they come into contact. It is very readable for any adult as well as children and although children may not get the subtle messages the adults will.
As for this political stuff about golliwogs, I find it mystifying. I adored and still do mine and i never made the connection with black people at all until this issue came up. I can remember having a dolly that was a chubby baby with very black colouring and it had rings in its ears. I loved that too but never knew what happened to it. Probably got rid of because we lived abroad a lot and it cost too much to transport everything.
I have watched tv less and less this last year because of the rubbish on it.we downgraded our package so we only have freeview for tv now. I would live without it altogether but hubby would not know what to do. We did do it years ago and after 12 months he caved, he does not read or have hobbies.
I have been drinking nettle tea in the hope it helps my arthritis which it is supposed to do and am in the process of making a tincture of it.
"the majority of cases the mental illness which has caused the sufferer to end their life has been misdiagnosed or poorly treated"
Jackie that is so true. BIL took his own life six weeks before dh and I got married. He had been taken to hospital the evening before by mil and they kept going on about his epilepsy when he had been talking about ending it all! They sent him home and he hung himself while the family were out. They had actually called into my work to tell me about the hospital that morning. I think they wanted reassurance but I was just a kid and could not really help with anything concrete. Mil died a broken woman a few years later on the anniversary of his death of a massive heart attack.
Sammy. Mr S does value rolls but they have made them jumbo size so you get six instead of twelve. I got some to see how they lasted and it was no different to the smaller ones. I just did not need to get another out so often0 -
My heart goes out to those who have lost someone to suicide, how desperate must they have been to go through with it. The Nhs doesnt seem to deal with mental illness well does it. it took my breaking down in the Gps office a few weeks ago to get my OH some help - 12 months between asking to see someone and actually getting there. I think maybe because my friend who is a social worker was in the waiting room saw the state of me that she spoke to the Gp and got things moving. Thank god she was there because I really could not live on a knife edge another minute. Its appointment number 2 today. Apparently when we initially were referred they sent me details of where to go if Oh was really bad - nope, didnt get the details - so when he had his meltdown before Xmas I didnt know what to do - I do now!
Onto brighter things, drizzly but sunny here and everything is coming on in leaps and bounds, maybe need to cut a hole in the hedge and start planting next door soon, Im sure Kevin wouldnt mind, he just has grass there :rotfl:Am using a 2 quid box of growmore and it seems to be really good. Am only growing tiny toms this year as last years blight was heart breaking - lost 30 big plants, 6 varieties but tiny ones can stay inside.
right off to make a start on the wedding favours etc and use my new glue gun, or should I use the old one which turned up 2 days later!Clearing the junk to travel light

there's some really simple ones on the goodfood website (www.bbcgoodfood.com ?) that someone from this thread put me on to, http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/7380/banana-cake. i added about 100g of sultanas and some orange zest which worked quite well.Every act of kindness, no matter how small, isn’t wasted ❤️

thanks - I was thinking more of the thin baguette shapes than loaves as such. I will probably just give it a go and see how it turns out.
I think my bread is always so rubbish because of my kneading technique - what is the secret to an airy loaf??0 -
Nigella's best Banana bread recipe is to die for, I just googled it for the recipe one day when I had a glut of black bananas (really if there is no green I struggle to eat them) It is now a firm favourite of ours, but I only include the rum if it's a special occassion, I'd prefer to drink that on its own instead of cooking out the alcohol (he he)0

I second the Nigella recommendation, this is the one I usually do - I soak the sultanas (or raisins as that is what we usually have in) in orange or apple juice to get them plump and juicy. I wouldn't normally buy spirits just for cooking - I'm too stingy! Is it ok to type out the recipe (fully accredited to Ms Lawson!) here as I will look it out for you??
ETA no need! here it ishttp://www.nigella.com/recipes/view/banana-bread-142
don't know why I bother buying recipe books!0 -

Sammy - The Tesco value toilet rolls are now jumbo sized so you get 8 for £1.00. last month my tesco didnt have a ny for over a week whilst they were changing the pack size.
Sainsburys has also changed but they still sell the 4 standard size pack for around 50p.Mum, wife and dinnerlady!0
