Speaking of which - and curbing my materialistic tendencies for a minute <down gal/sit/shut up> - that comment from Broomstick re "They cant ration these" book....hmmm...its not there to read for free on Googlebooks (darn it...).
So - I'm left wondering whether they include the gypsy method of cooking hedgehogs - ie coat with mud and bake in fire and when they are cooked peeling off the mud takes the prickles off with it??
But - I guess no-one wants to attempt cooking Mrs Tiggywinkle?:rotfl:. Squirrel Nutkin on the other end - if they happen to be the "invaders" - ie the grey ones....hmmm....
I'd searched before posting to see if the book was around online and couldn't find a link either. That's the one for hedgehogs. The instructions end with 'lastly skin the legs'.
The 'Squirrel Tail Soup' recipe says that 'the tail, which is put aside after skinning, can be used with haricot beans, onions and herbs in making a delicious soup'. Let us know how it goesWe won't be trying either.

Grey Queen. Just a thought but Asda sell some trousers in a 33" long length if you have one near you.
HTHThat's a good thing to know. There's one a couple of miles away. Do you have to opportunity to try them on or do you just buy and return them if they don't fit?
Sorry to be a numptie but I've never bought clothes in the supermarket; bit too upmarket for me, I'm normally at the c.s. or jumble sale.:o
EDIT Ceridwen I haven't done dieting per se because I love my food but haven't had any bars of cholocate and I was scoring 120g bar of Aero per day. I expected it to drop off more than it has but I guess I'm heading into the change (bring it on, am so bored with you-know-what since I was 12). I can lose weight quite fast on Atkins but I don't have enough money to afford that malarkey, plus it bungs you up, plus it's probably not a healthy option in the long term. I'm pretty chuffed that I've broken the cholocate habit and may extend it to a pastry ban (once I've finished the contents of the freezer, naturally.)
All together now; Who ate all the pies? GREYQUEEN!!!!!!!!!!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thank you everyone for all the links to more old books. I need to check with my mum to see if she's got any of her old ones. The Good Housekeeping looking after people who are ill book from the 1950s springs to mind. Wonder where that one went?

Golly Gee,
I wish reading used up loads of calories - keeping up with this thread would make me a skinnymalink. Unfortunately I am anything but.
Thanks for all the posts about wine making. We used to do that 15-20 years ago. Haven't got much of the stuff left but am thinking of starting again. We made some elderberry wine that was scrummy.
We used to use demi-johns so can anyone tell me what a PET is?
Thanks in advance.Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

silvermaid a PET is a 5 litre plastic water bottle. You can get them at homebrew shops or you can buy 5 litres of water for 92p from Tesco to get one.
More foraging for foraging sites today and a lucky find. The route I usually walk has a walnut tree on it - I've never had nuts off it as they disappear before I get to them. Today I found 2 more trees and one is in an out of the way not walked much bit so I stand a good chance of free walnuts later this year :j
Stuck to my jobs list for the third day running - must be summat wrong with me :rotfl:Discovered yesterday that gloss painting goes ever so much better if accompanied by an audio book, which is a good thing as I've got loads to do!
Defrosted the freezer yesterday and repacked it so I've got enough room for stuff from the garden as I'm regularly picking and eating things now and will be in glut mode soon. I've already frozen a load of broad beans from my neighbour who keeps hanging a carrier full at my back gate - he's a lovely old boy and I'm very grateful. I'll have to see what he hasn't grown and let him have something from my own garden.
I love coming on here but I need to limit the amount of time I hang around and be more productive. But I'll try to catch up once a day at least.

Grey Queen, you can try the clothes on in the Supermarket as most of them have changing rooms, but if you buy anything to try on at home usually no trouble getting a refund.
I have often taken different sizes home to try on, or just plain changed my mind and taken things back."When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us" Alexander Graham Bell0 -
I would kinda like one of those little flat robotic vacuums called Roomba (or something similar) which seem to be cute and useful. I suppose I could always glue-gun some fake fur and googly eyes onto it to give it the ahhhhh factor.
They had a creature like that on the TV programme 'Robot Wars'. You'd have no carpet left and you'd need shin guards. :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Unixgirluk, yes its just the hem off the jacket, would look quite good if I bind the edges - I am off to my craft room to try it tonight! I was pondering last night what to do with OH's spare duvet (single) as its lying around in the way and annoying me so found a big sample piece of tapestry fabric and am making it into a floor cushion, that way Dgs - who is much better today) can use it until I need to swap OH's quilt! Sadly I was rushing and broke the needle on my ancient Singer so am off to forage in the house for my spares. I also put baby lotion in OH's bath which made a bloomin mess so had to scrub out the bath and start again, thats why I wasnt concentrating on sewing the cushion
Went to Mr T and stocked up on 40.00 worth of basics as I have a feeling the prices are going to shoot up again - I can feel it in my water, as they say :rotfl:I had a 6.00 off a 40 quid shop voucher and found a 3.00 off in my purse too and both were accepted :T so it only came to 31.00. While we were bereft of benefits my cupboards were frighteningly empty, not a good O/S place to be. now I feel much better.Clearing the junk to travel light

GreyQueen - I don't know if it's your cup of tea or if there's one nearby but New Look sell "tall" clothes, the leg length on the jeans are 34in so I'm guessing all trousers are the same. I only know because my daughter and I were rifling through their sales rails the other day only to realise we were in the Tall section. We're both 5ft2in.

I have an old british gas cookbook upstairs somewhere that has a recipe for brains on toast - not that I'm in any hurry to try it out :rotfl:
With fava beans and a nice Chianti?:rotfl:It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
