Well I will admit to 6 litres of VERY out of date bottled water in our attic. Along with lots of Gloucestershire we were without running water for 10 days in July 2007. I know this water shouldn't be used for drinking but if I ever wake up to dry taps at least I know I can have a thorough wash, including my hair. Those 10 days did teach us how to make good use of our water when we have to.

OOh, yes - we were without water for 16 days and electricity 36 hours during that - learnt to be economical and creative with water during that time!! Thankfully it was school hols, as I spent an awful lot of time chasing around bottled water dliveries. I was very frustrated at the people giving me the same as any other adult when I had 3 small children with me. People with bigger children had rtheir children collecting it so got more or two adults for twice as much. OH was out at about 7 each morning and back around 7.30 each night - so useless for getting water in the main, as there wasn't usually a delivery then. I only found water in a bowser once.

Anyway, we've been picking strawberries from our 3 plants!! :) I'm hoping they send some runners out so we'll have more plants next year. I've furtled the potatoes and they're going well - I must water them enough in this hot weather, though - which I haven't been doing - so I've given it to DS1 as a job every evening and I'll do it in teh mornings.

This lovely weather is good for DH - he's a depressive (having ongoing counselling - which I expect will be for years) but the nice weather does seem to perk him up a bit and make him want to do stuff. His energy levels aren't brilliant (combination of depression and diabetes with new meds which aren't quite 'right' yet) but it's noce to see him with some 'get up and go' for a change - even if it has soon got up and gone!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The end of school term is fast approaching - school plays, fairs and trips abound this month!! Money, money, money!!

Good to see you back Mardatha. Y'know I've heard that a really good remedy for chest infections is kale, worn like a poultice....

Am feeling partly human today, HUGE thanks to everybody who kindly missed me - bet the peace was bliss ! I jwasnt too ill to lift a mouse but just couldnt be bothered reading loads of posts. I think the ME goes into overdrive when you get ill and whacks you on the head with a hammer. The SUN IS SHINING and I'm going to sit in back garden on the swing and bake slowly.

Even partly human is good Mardatha. Hope it keeps improving.
Now, get RV to push you on that swing so you get a fine breeze! Even settee stype (!) swings can take a wee push!
Have a good day folks. Agree with everyone gailey - don't do so much!

Good evening everyone. Welcome to snowflake and get well soon Mardatha: I'm not suprised you've got a chest infection with all the lousy weather we've been having recently.

The latest here is, cue drum roll..............
I've just had my first attempt at jam making.

The good news is I got more in the jars than on the floor:p

The not so good news is that if the sample from the bottom of the pan is anything to go by I have accidentally made summer fruits toffee instead of jam:o I'm hoping that it's just because I scraped all the sticky bits into a bowl that it was solid and that the stuff in jars will be a bit better. My OH encouragingly told me not to worry as he is scheduled to go to the dentist next week anyway: cheeky so-and-so.

If it is solid is there anything I can do about it? Or is just a matter of trying again next time?

LOL I expect someone else will have already answered this but if not, warm the jars up in hot water, empty them back into your jam pan, add hot water and reboil, use a thermometer to check for jam temperature (not toffee ) or use a cold saucer from the fridge to test for the set point.
    Repot in clean jars.

I wrote a longish post last night but just as I was about to push submit HH jumped on me and the 'puter and deleted it!

Anyway the gist was that the treacle tin didn't explode (I opened it ouside just in case), Mardatha - get well soon, Larumbelle - at least you've got a diagnosis and you can adapt your lifestyle. Brilliant bargains last night! We live 10 miles from the nearest supermarket so can't take advantage.

GreyQueen - our friend had one of the orange canvas traingular tents but decided to get a super-duper hi-tech jobbie. He used it twice now he back in the canvas one! We have a tent for every occasion in our loft from a bivvy bag to a 6 man frame tent but gave it up a couple of years ago . Friends/ colleagues would get back from camping trips looking like they'd been to Spain but we would get stroms, gails and torrentail rain. We bought a caravan and since then have had fab weather!

    Have a good day everyone!
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say

Morning all. Have just caught up with you all. I do not get on here often enough these days to reply to anyone in particular especially as the topics change so quickly, but I do miss you all.

Despite me working extra shifts we are still not making much headway with money. Each month we need to use some of our savings to make ends meet. There is now only the smallest of margins between us managing to pay all of the bills etc or increasing our debt. Have just worked 15 shifts over 14 days, yesterday was a double (7am till 10 pm). I am so looking forward to having today off. We have worked out that until OH is earning I need to work 6 extra shifts (on top of my full time hours) a month to keep our heads above water. I know I should not complain because I am lucky enough to have a job and to be able to work extra shifts but boy am I tired. OH and the girls are all helping out with the housework but there are still things the I need to do at home that they don’t seem to notice need doing. I am also fussy and like things done a certain way, there are some things I just cannot let slide.

On money saving topic one of my aunts and her daughter have sent a bag of clothes to mums. I am now the owner of some new tops as are both my girls and my niece, and I am still sticking to my vow not to buy any new clothes this year for myself.

The veg plots are now really coming into their own. Will be having homegrown brocauli, cauli, carrots and broad beans with the Sunday roast to day (aldi are still doing 10lb frozen turkeys for £5.99).

Friends of ours have a fully functioning allotment but the hubby is going to work in London for 12months and will only be home every other weekend when he will have the children from his first marriage. They have asked if we will mind the plot for them for the year. We are really looking forward to this and hopefully at the end of this OH will be keen to take on an allotment of our own.

The Occupational Health department at work are running a 10 week shape up clinic all about diet and exercise for heart health. You get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked at the beginning middle and end of the course with a weekly weigh in. I was not happy with my weight on the first weigh in as I had gained more than I thought but two weeks later I have lost 5 lb so feeling really pleased with that. Blood pressure and cholesterol OK as well.

Sorry for the long post really need to try to post more often.

Enjoy your weekend and hugs to all who need them.

Mrs VegPlot - You are doing more than your share simply by working all the extra shifts. IF stuff isnt getting done properly you need to leave specific lists of jobs and how you would like them done. If you do too much you will end up poorly or resenting that you are carying the full load, neither would help. Take time to relax you have earned it. :)

Hi Mardatha - glad to see you back and that you've got sunshine :T

Sunny here as well = yet more watering tonight. I've put myself on a hosepipe ban this year as my water bill was huge, so now it's a watering can and water from a butt. It's taking more time, carrying, etc but the water meter readings are much less this year so I'll persevere with it. After a couple more months I'll get the water company to reduce the direct debit or cancel it if they won't reduce it - don't get a discount for using direct debit and fed up of paying so much that I'm in constant credit

Right - off to find out how much salt to add to homemade butter, have a good day all
