Hello this is my first post on this thread. I'm loving this board and especially this thread. :j

Just wanted to say I learned something today: wanted to make a white cheese sauce for a pasta bake and had next to no milk, so I used water instead (with the flour, butter and cheese), and it was fine. No need for milk in there at all. :D

Not very near Edinburgh Pink, but nearish. No I never go up there, it's too hectic for me. Just to visit my son who lives there.
  • Freudianslip - Pineapple contains an enzyme that breaks down protein and gelatine is a type of protein. Fortunately cooking destroys it so you can use cooked or canned pineapple in jelly. Its also why it works well as a meat tenderiser. Kiwi fruit has the same enzyme and I think papaya but I'm not sure. Heston Blumental did this thing once where he put a whole chilli in with the jelly while making it and the jelly set with fresh pineapple and he claimed there was no chilli taste but I've never tried it. (hmmm feels experiment coming on now the yr 11's have gone and I have more time...)
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

:o Send us some rain! Here in Lincolnshire, we are officially in drought :o Its mind blowingly labour intensive watering up the allotment every night although have had 2lb of strawbrries so far and the blackcurrants are ripening fast :)

I have been shopping today for the first time for a couple of weeks - prices have shot up alarmingly - at Sainsbugs, Basic apples have gone from 65p per kg to £1 - 50% increase! How can this be?

Did get a bargain on Yorkshire Teabags though in Wilkos- 80bags + 100% free = 160 bags for £2.18 :)

Having a few health problems so have been reading but not posting for a while - having MRI scan on Friday so hoping to get sorted soon :)

Within reach of Ikea. Bearing in mind that for Ikea I'd shove a peanut with my nose for 100 miles and it would still be worth it .... :D

Not here there isn't!:p I need the big yellow ball. Fast. Can't believe that you have tomatoes already - I have about 1 flower:eek:

One flower more than me:( - but then I only bought the 3 plants yesterday so maybe I'm expecting too much from the tomorite!!

I don't have a greenhouse or cold frame so I've positioned 3 tomato plants on the kitchen window sill and will see what develops. In the unlikely event of a heatwave in Central Scotland I'll pop them out into a grow bag. I can only try:)

OH and I are both products of single sex grammar schools. Here in Gloucestershire we still have grammar schools - 6 single sex (3 of each) and one mixed. 11+ test is optional. DD & DS1 both took it - DD goes to my old grammar & DS1 will start at OH's old grammar come September. Ideally I'd like DS2 & DS3 to go to grammar schools too - I really dislike our local comp (I worked there and saw first hand what it can be like)

Courgettes - I add chunked courgettes to chilli and grated to pasta sauce and bolognaise/ lasagne. I also make a courgette and tomato soup (recipe in Grocery Challenge thread, I believe)

We tidied our garage today - I have enough w-u liquid and washing powder and liquid and fab softener to last over 12 months. Not something I would normally use but with the old Tesco DTD promotion I got paid to take a lot of it away or got it for £1. Enough tinned toms & baked beans to last the rest of the year, another few bags of oats, some choc cereal, pasta (although not masses of this), tea bags & coffee for the rest of the year. Freezer is full and I also have a little freezer (my late dad's) empty ready for when the garden has a glut of produce. Oh, and 4 bags each of plain & s/r flour (2 bags of each in my pantry) All helps to keep the wolf from the door when my husband's contract runs out if he doesn't have another :D

  • I'm definitely feeling a bit fed up what with one thing and another. So much for the forecast of dry weather until this afternoon - we've had non-stop rain since mid morning, which means my washing is on the drier in the spare room.

I did a trip to MrM and like everyone else here: I definitely noticed the price increases. I managed to get four of the last five bags of value pasta on the shelf: but I did notice that there was a definite shortage of value stuff. We also went to Costco where sultanas were £4 for 2kg - exactly the same price as the MrM value ones, so I picked up some. They also had some nice tinned toms at around 30p a tin so I stocked up on a dozen of them. I also noticed that they still have the white manitoba flour (which is fantastic for bread making) for £10.99 for 16kg so at least that hasn't gone up yet. I can't get any just yet as I am still working my way through the last lot.

How do people here keep track of the prices of stuff: do you keep it all in a notebook? I'm thinking of trying to keep a list of the prices of the basic stuff that i buy most weeks so that if I notice a good bargain I can stock up.

Somebody tell me it is all worth while. I sometimes feel that you don't get any thanks for coping and plodding along and doing the best you can and I'm not sure why I bother!
