oh red russian kale too, now that is a good one and can be eaten young in salads as well as being ultra hardy. It germinates quickly. I had 2 growing in a raised bed and had to take them out and they were very wide and dense so I am off to the allotment later to take one of my 2 out. I only need one

    And another newbie!!!

I've been trying to de-lurk for a couple of weeks but have had problems registering!

Re storage of sacks of flour - we bought some used food-grade barrels off the inernet which are air/water tight. We use them for putting our canoeing kit in should we capsize/get rained on. The only draw back may be if they taint the flour with what was put in them originally - ours have 'vindaloo paste' stamped on the side!!!

I don't do gardening (got solid clay) but am a storecupboard fanatic. OH has been out of work for several months and we haven't had to buy any loo/kitchen roll, toiletries, cleaning products, washing powder, tuna, tinned tomatos etc. He used to think that I was more than a little bonkers but he's changed his tune now!
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say

boultdj I think it would have to be metal because of the risk of fire but it is a good idea.

Kittie, we have the same problems with drying onions - it always rains when you are trying to do it. However, have just had a thought. If the onions are put on the racks (we have wire mesh) then a tarp could be strung up over it, leaving the sides open. Tarps are cheap enough and multi-tasking, so that may be one solution.

Also looking at insulating shed a bit because some of them got frosted last winter. Am considering stapling old quilts to ceiling - what do you think?

good idea re tarp jamanda. Oh I get collywobbles now when I think of getting the produce stored, so much even after giving some away. I think I`ll make plaits as they`ll be easy to move but even so the garage and shed would get frosted if it were -14 again. Even a bottle of wine burst. Maybe under the stairs as that is reasonably cool or maybe I`ll carry on chopping and sauteeing and freezing. I can also dehydrate some

Our council gave us one each free, and you could have an extra one - also free if you asked for it.

I checked. Our council will help us with a heavily discounted price of £15. It will have to wait for now.

Anyone who is interested can click http://www.getcomposting.com/ enter your postcode to see if your council has any offers or subsidies of compost bins :)

I've also turned the temperature of the hot water thermostat down so it's comfortable to wash my hands in, and I just top it up with boiling water from the kettle (or from a saucepan on the gas if there's one waiting to be cleaned) for the washing up. Saves heating the whole hot water cylinder to a high temp.

Thank you for sharing, I have just done this.

FS - my boys were just the same at that age! I used to give them a packed lunch because then they could graze through the day. They both worked out that they would eat their biscuit/cake at breaktime, sandwich or whatever for lunch with a drink and then fruit for afternoon playtime. Lunch was for playing with friends not eating!! There have been several times when they have got into the car opened their lunchbox and then proceeded to have lunch :rotfl: ITs not the dinner ladies fault and if I were you I WOULD complain because thats how eating disorders start.

I have just spoken to the head at the gate. She was so defensive before I even started, and I wonder why I don't think chirping up is a good idea. Upshot is the dinner lady is a very nice lady, lovely with children and would never do something on purpose to upset a child. I said very calmly that I understand that but she has inadvertently upset my little girl and from now on could she be left to eat as much or as little as she pleases. I'm nice with it too, I don't know why they have to be so uppity.

I have been given some kohl rabi seeds. Can someone please tell me what the hell this is??? :D It sounds like some new eye liner that clinique have brought out.

    :D

Have been away from this thread for ages due to internet access problems but kohl rabi is a delightful vegetable to grow. It's bulb, which resembles a turnip, looks like a sputnick with the leaves sprouting out from the bulb. They are much milder than a turnip and come with purple or pale green skins, although I think the purple varieties are slightly superior. You can cook them like a turnip, but they have a very delicate taste and are delicious finely sliced raw in salads or stir fries. You can also cook the leaves as you would cabbage, so nothing is wasted.

I've got a batch of them growing in my vegetable garden. The bulbs are just starting to swell and Ican't wait to harvest the ones. For some reason they're rarely available to buy in supermarkets or greengrocers, and quite expensive if you can find them, so worth growing.
