And if you have been forwarned about flooding or other disater it is less stressful to know you can just grab your bag. This is what people do in areas prone to disasters. They have ready what they call a bugout or grab bag.

    Congratulations catznine.

Note to self - and must also remember my mobile phone charger in that bag - as the different manufacturers still all have different ones at the moment (so couldnt use someone else's).

Just popping in quickly to send hugs to all that need them, congratulations to catznine and wish softstuff a safe journey.

Moving still and its very hard work, toothache back and another trip to dentist for yet more antibiotics, but finally I can start to see that we are making a difference, the fifth bedroom is now built and drying, DS7 room is finished and bed all constructed, loft here emptied and two sheds are all built. Am alone with only kids tomorrow as OH and dad are working, so hoping to spend the time here getting washing done and more stuff packed ready to go. Had big shock today when we realised our sofas wont make it up to the living room on the first floor:eek: so am having to look at removing a balcony and hoisting them up .

Plants not yet moved as workmen have been trampling in the garden and I wanted to keep them safe.
have family wedding at the weekend which severely limits the work and meant i had to find an outfit - spent two hours looking and hated everything so ended up buying dress in Mr A that I saw days ago - could have saved the time if I had thought about it. :)

Blimey kidcat - you must be shattered hun. It'll all be worth it in the end though, eh? :)

suzid I hope ancient one continues to make steady progress :)

jackel It hadn't been mentioned about salt being in the veggie water, so, although I don't add salt to my veggies when I boil them, I appreciate you pointing it out all the same. I don't mind anyone pointing out what might be obvious to them, but might not be for me, as I would indeed be gutted if I had watered them with salted water and they all died. This is my first time growing veg, so I'm grateful for any input :)

Ants seem marginally put off by the talc, but are not exactly packing up and moving out, so it's citrus oil on string tonight!

I keep finding an odd ant wandering round the kitchen so I tried the cinnamon round the door frame and promptly dropped the cinnamon pot in the full mop bucket :rotfl: so when ds comes she will be smelling cinnamon all over the house and thinking I have made her cakes!

Redlady if you pass Manchester pick me up hunny and I would love to meet you and FK and visit Mardatha :) I got no Kale but have lots of chard this year.

Something has eaten my squash plant !!!! But i have another one in the greenhouse so will wait a bit an pop it out soon. Pumpkin plant is doing ok. Just going to check on everything while that yellow thing is still around.

I will go back to read the several pages I have skipped but I want to keep you up to date on futures. Here are a few snippets from today 30 may

extreme weather threatened to limit output as global demand increases. (this refers to agricultural)

The Standard & Poor’s GSCI Agriculture Index climbed for the second straight week as droughts lingered in China and Europe while excess moisture delayed planting in the U.S. and Canada. Last week, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley signaled a bullish outlook for commodities, raising their forecasts for crude-oil prices by more than 20 percent. (bullish means that futures prices are going UP)
The global recovery from a recession that followed the 2008 financial crisis “is gaining strength and is becoming more self-sustained, (this means that other nations will be more competitive for commodities)

I cannot get through to my own DDs about stocking to save money later. Anyway heres the info and do with it what you will. I know what I am going to do!!

Don't forget if the price of grain goes up, so will the price of meat so make sure you stock up well on veggies, pulses, beans and meat if you can.
I have actually been running my cupboards down but I saw that dried fruit has jumped from 67p a bag to 99p a bag so I have started hoarding again.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

all the more reason to grow our own. Did you see Chelsea last week? Apparently theres only 4 days of food supply in London. if transport stopped [volcanic ash anyone?] then food would run out in under a week. SO ,grow what you can, lettuce in a window box, herbs in pots, sprouts in the front garden. Grow Grow Grow.

This is my favourite dolmades recipe.
    http://www.cuisine.com.au/recipe/Stuffed-vine-leaves
You can freeze the prepared dolmades, (and you can freeze the blanched vineleaves, or they can be bottles in brine) I pack them into take away plastic tubs with a little of the cooking juices. They can be eaten hot or cold.

Thank you so much for that Seakay - looks lovely, I'll let you know how it goes when I try it out! Will try blanching some leaves as well. The vine's on a pergola (??) my OH built at the back of the house outside the kitchen door - it's about 35' long!

Congratulations Catznine, safe journey Softstuff and :T for Mardatha's tomatoes.

Well I went to Waitrose to shop today, but didn't buy any meat. The selection seemed quite limited and it was eye-wateringly expensive, although it looked to be very good quality. I bought fish instead. BUT they had some amazing reductions on fruit and veg - punnets of cherries and nectarines for 19p, a bag of sugar snap peas for 10p, 1kg Jersey royals for 50p, fancy mushrooms and those big flat mushrooms for 19p per tray. There were also a lot of ready meals about half-price, but they still seemed expensive and not really my thing. There was a family of four, each with a trolley, who were grabbing everything as the reduced stickers went on. All four trollies were full to overflowing. This was alll at about 6pm. I'd go again for the fruit and veg, and also perhaps bread if I had freezer space as the reductions were so good.
