Jil I posed the question to my canning group last night and found 1 reply this morning. These people are mostly very experienced food preservers so I would always go with their opinion on safety.
here is my question and the answer.
Would you eat this after say four weeks without freezing or canning it?
Partridge escabeche
this site has the recipe and on the actual show it was apparently put in jars
and left as it was with no other treatment.

I found this blog which says it is perfectly safe to eat weeks later.

I would not touch it with a barge pole but then I don't eat game meats anyway.
Answer:
Well, my barge pole ain't touching it either and I eat game meat. Saw too
many folks come thorugh the ER that ate some type of fish that was cured
like this. Nope, no thanks!

GQ that is not a bad price and is campareable with my asian shop rice. I think there is only pence in it. I buy around 10kg a year but bought again early this year and may get some more.
I seal it with tape in choccy tins that people give me after the big C is over.
Bought some long grain at a silly price in mr t last year to put away in case my kids are struggling. We normally only eat basmati as it is lower on the glyceamic index.0 -

redlady, sorry to hear about OBB - I can still vividly remember driving home sobbing after my cat had to be put to sleep and, although we've always had animals, I am probably the least animal-mad of us all. Yes, pets do get to you - they are part of the family, after all.
jackel - glad you've posted and welcome out of lurkdom! :T
jamanda and grandma247 and seakay, thanks for the tomato preservation posts - the tomato puree one was really interesting. I "can" my tomatoes - for longer than 10 minutes, I hasten to add - but I make them into sauce first. I also did a ?Jamie Oliver? thing last year where I roasted the tomatoes and then made them into sauce - that was especially yummy, but only worth doing if you've got the oven on anyway. Jamanda, I have a nice little bottling guide complete with four different methods and timings, so if you'd be interested in a copy, then do pm me.
On the subject of dehydrators, there was an article about them in this month's Home Farmer, and they were selling them at Ascott for £29.99 - it's on this page. I think this is actually the machine they used in the article, so for that price, it might be worth thinking about.0 -
I'm finding it very hard to buy food at the moment. Am tending to live on garbage cos its cheap. Like most main meals are one packet of value noodles etc.But I went to my local tescos yesterday and was stunned by the margins of increase on goods from only 2 days before. Value noodles up 2p or rather 25%! Value beans and tinned sausages and beans up from 29p to 39p. (increase of 33%)value honey up from 67p to 99p..(my maths is too poor for that one)
NONE of these things seem to me to be affected by things like crops and rain/drought. Tescos continues to make record profits. it galls me that they put up the cost of Value things by HUGE profit margins when value shoppers are in the main the people least able to afford any increase.I cannot cut down on my food anymore than I already have. I try to buy dirt cheapest items and eat a lot less than the little I used to. I dont have the option to plant or grow my own as I live in a flat.I do not spend on anything like gifts, social life etc I sit in and read library books. I try to walk as much as I physically can instead of bus fares and tube fares. I really dont know what else I can do cos sadly I cannot stop eating..
on a footnote I always used to say if I didnt have to eat to live I wouldnt and I stick by that. Every penny I have to spend on food galls me.I could be using it to improve the quality of my life. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Re the disappearance of the Basics lines and even the cheaper lines in the supermarkes, I've been noticing this too! I have a little Mr T near me and several of the Basics range (they never had the full selection) have just GONE. I mean, there are empty shelves and "sorry, this item is out of stock" notices and it's been like that for about a week. Their Basics peanuts jumped from 32p to 38p overnight then vanished, you can't find the cheap jellies anywhere and several other things aren't there anymore.
haven't you?!
who dont have the jump in the car and go elsewhere option. Even the staff have said their manager has no clue who their shoppers are.
the jellies also dont seem to exist I used to eat them for my nails occasionally and even Sainsburys dont have them.
Basics peanuts used to be 27p btw. Used to take them to the football with me.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Reverbe do you have a sunny windowsill you are willing to sacrifice?
I have cut up 2ltr milk bottles and put them on a windowsill (outside in my case) and intend putting a few seeds in one of them every few days so I will have a continous supply of green leaves. I mixed a variety of lettuce seeds, beetroot.radish, spinach and will add some cabbage type ones in another lot. If you don't cut them too low down they will grow again so you get at least two cuttings from them. That way you will still be getting the vitamins and minerals you need. Seeds can be bought cheaply at l*dl,N*ett0 and reduced at wilkies and some other shops now.
Also have you tried sprouting dried peas and beans from the supermarket? Just don't do kidney, cannelini (they are white kidney).
If you eat dried pulses try cooking the whole bag at once and freezing in portions to save on fuel. They can then be used in a variety of dishes. Google is a wonderful thing for finding recipes.0 -
For me I have had to 'say no' to the big wig supermarkets and opt for Aldi and Lidl. They're very cheap in comparison but the only thing I worry about is that I'm filling my little ones with pesticides, got to be - fruit and veg that cheap but at the minute we have to do what we can to get through this.
I so would love to pick up my box scheme again but right now I can't even afford the spiralling T/Asd/Mor/Sains prices. (secretly I'm chuffed to bits I'm not lining the bigwigs pockets though)I'm challenging myself to only buy clothes from charity shops till 20th May 2012.

Thanks Grandma for your advice. we dont actually have any window sills. but someone might find your tip useful. Thanks for posting
Fuddled I find any mention of aldi and lidl baffling as whenever I look in them they seem a lot more expensive than mr t and mr s, the veg always looks ropy and the meat always looks grey..What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Not too bad where I am Riverbe. I was happy with the pork chops I picked up yesterday but yeah, the fruit and veg doesn't last very long at all. Needs must though.I'm challenging myself to only buy clothes from charity shops till 20th May 2012.
