As The Workhouse Approaches....How To Do Everything To Avoid It, the Old Style Way

Bah, what did I say about it being fine at the moment? Just finished my last post, looked out of the window and it's tipping it down. I've had to hobble out into the yard to put my chickens back in their covered pen. They looked more like drowned rats than chooks as they're too dumb to seek shelter for themselves, doh! Ask me how I know that hens don't appreciate being towelled dry ......Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Del Monte tomatoes 4 pack for £1 at Home Bargains if anyone is close to one. Just got back.
Same tomatoes, same price at Heron Foods (frozen foods) if you have one near.
They generally seem to be in town centres. In the 10 years we have lived in this area I never bothered to go in and have a look until recently and was pleasantly surprised at their prices. They also sell Pataks jars of curry at 79p each.
Another sharp rise in price I noticed is on jelly. I normally buy Mr T's value jellies at 6p each, however they seem to have disappeared from their shelves. The only jellies they now stock are 36p each:eek:
Anyone know where I can buy cheap jellies?
I love jelly and a tin of Saisbury's basic mandarin oranges 27p for a pudding. Serves 4, so is a cheap pud.0 -

Ginnyknit..i agree with you,we the little people have to think before we do,use anything,i don't see the "powers that be" worrying about how to feed, clothe, keep their little families..
Iris..Mr A does a smartprice jelly it was 6p..don't quote me on that though..i always do a jelly and fruit pudding,or icecream and jelly..
Cranky..WELL DONE:T:T...
Well i haven't been out and spent anything so i have been cleaning and baking..i finally did a freezer inventory this morning and was impressed with myself..its mostly full of HM stuff, soups, pies, quiches, pasties, couple of stews and lots of cakes:o..did a tinned cupboard list and thats not too bad either so will do a shop when i need to but think i can hold out for another fortnight..been sorting my DS room out..crikes the junk he has..well its gone to the CS this morning..i also had a good de-clutter of toy room and my room plus wardrobes..it all feels so much roomier(that a word:D)..anyway..i did the airing cupboard and put all my winter blankets and throws in the wardrobe i got at the weekend..lovely it has free'd up more space so the air can circulate better in there..
My mum went to the CS's at the weekend at got me a whole bedset (single) pure white flannellet sheets, pillowcase and a big blanket for £3..and lots of pillowcases in a big bundle for 75p..non matching but that doesn't matter they are all lovely...
Got all my laundry on the line ..i am refusing to use my drier at all...so that means lots of ironing later:D..

I do something similar. However, to free up freezer space I'm thinking of putting the sauce in bottles (old jam jars, etc) and water bath for 10 minutes. Does anyone think this will work ok?
If you get jars with pop top lids and put hot contents into the hot jars and screw the lid on then a vacuum should form (if it does the lid will pop) which is much easier than doing the waterbath thing (which if you were going to do you would need to do for longer - timings towards the bottom of this page http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/348/348-594/348-594.html).
I heat jars by filling them with boiling water and them drying them in a very cool oven.0 -
i just had one of those rush of blood moments --i emptied all my uk bank accounts and transfered everything to turkey!-i have been sitting on the fence for months but i just bit the bullet!---its going into my wife's account until i re-invest it in deposit accounts and gold---its 7,75pc net on savings here but mortgages are 11pc typically!
İ just had my saterlite tv system upgraded to HDİ--as soon as i put it on i noticed the difference even with my poor eyesight----then i saw that my favourite football channel is on HDİ which is something i didnt know and is a great bonus(pity the football season is over!!)-still i can watch all the replays through the summer and be able to define what is happening!!--DH has an exciting life with me!!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -
GQ - I bought several sets of 4 for £1 (think they were the heinz ones) from Asda a couple of weks ago and then the others (del monte) at Home and bargains. I find tomato offers are like buses - you wait ages for a good one then loads arrive at the same time
Been busy packing again this morning, have packed nine boxes from the kitchen and still got loads to do, trouble is the rest of the stuff we use regualrly and without a date I dont see the point in packing them yet.
ETA - our lab has learned to open our kitchen bin today (Its the pedal type) I got rid of the flip top bin as he used to stick his head in and then walk around with the lid trapped round his neck. So all suggestions of dog proof bins please:) I did point out that in my eyes its showinghis intelligence - OH doesnt agree nor did DD16 when she had to clean after him this morning!!0 -

Have tried Asda, but they are no longer on their web site, same as Tesco. There used to be some cheap jellies at Sainsburys, but again these have disappeared from the shelves.
Thank you FTM for your help, will try actually going into Asda, maybe there are some on the shelves.0 -

Thanks for that. I was going to do it this way but then panicked in case I poisoned anybody. IF the tomatoes don't get blight, I'll make as much concentrate as I can. DH won't eat lumps of tomato, I have to sieve tomatoes before making anything with them. If I boil them up again after sieving, I don't see why this shouldn't work.
Thanks for your help0 -
There's a recipe here for concentrated tomato paste, which takes up even less room for the number of tomatoes that it uses!

There are lots of different recipes but I like this one because there is very little cooking involved so even less expense involved in making it!0 -
Good luck purpleheather and congratulations Cranky40.
;)I quit chocolate at the start of the month and haven't dropped a bit for a couple of weeks, but I figure the absence of however many calories are in a big bar of chocolate a day (:o) must eventually make a difference. At least I've broken the craving....baby steps, baby steps, and good luck to anyone who's trying to drop a little weight.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
