Knitting needles for scarves

I have the wool for a fluffy scarf but I'm not sure which size needles to use. So far I have been told to use Size 1 (in old money)/7.50mm,but also have read that you can use 6mm & 4mm. I'm having a problem finding Size 1's but may have to resort to buying some!
I have 2 balls of wool per scarf. What needles have other people used?

If it recommends using 4mm and 6mm needles the wool is double knit. It would knit looser on the larger needles.

Knit a test square with just the larger needle and see how it looks. If it is not loose enough go for bigger needles.

Charity shops can be a good place to find needles.

I tried our charity shop today, they had lots but only ONE large needle! (uncertain of size). Also tried a friend but she only had ONE size 1 needle!! Are knitting needles the new socks?!

The pattern recommends 7.5 needles but I've read on here people using 4mm and 6mm. I have the fluffy/silky wool.
  • I am currently knitting a 2 ball scarf with the 49p per ball fluffy wool from Home Bargains - I knit it on size 8 needles if thats any help :)

If the pattern says 7.5mm you should stick to that size otherwise it won't turn out right. ( .5mm either side won't hurt )

Sorry I can't be much more help.

  • I knitted a scarf recently with some faby fluffy 'eyelash' type wool - it said use size 4-6 mm needles, so I split the difference and used 5mm needles, cast on 25 stitches and knit stocking stitch until the wool ran out. 100g of this wool did one scarf, about 15 cm by 120 cm. I was really pleased with it and have already had a request from someone else for one. It's fun wool to work with :)

That's the sort of wool I've got!! Silky eyelashes?

I'll give it a go with 4-6 mm needles (depending on which ones I've got). I know 4mm = size 8 and 6mm = size 4, so I presume 5mm must be size 6? I was going to use garter stitch (just knit).

I have knitting needles belonging to my Mum and Nan! But I never did 'get' metric!
  • Hi - yes I think 5 mm needles are UK size 6 - there's a conversion table thingy here

the wool I used is kind of silky - sounds similar anyway :)

I'm sure garter stitch would be fine - I did try a little bit in garter but decided I preferred the stocking stitch, but that was just me - I didn't have a pattern so I wasn't completely sure what I was doing!

Knitted my first scarf last year with that wonderful fluffy wool...I picked up a few pairs of needles from the charity shop and didn't even think about what size they were until reading this thread!

that's the great thing about that wool...it covers a multitude of sins (including the odd dropped stitch)
    weaving through the chaos...

I use garter stitch as with this wool it ends up looking the same both sides IYKWIM. I dont use a pattern, just cast on 20 stitches and knit the 2 balls up, sometimes make a fringe on the ends. I use bigger needles though so 25 stitches will probably work better with smaller needles.

    Good luck with it :)
