BT Locked Into 18 Month Broadband Contract

    I just emailed the Office of Fair trading to see their take on it, and we have a pretty good Law Center in my part of London. Thing is as no one has tested BT on this and until they do we wont know, if they involve debt collection agencies it will go to a magistrates court and I will be represented. I also have the right to repond to anything BT put on my credit file. I may lose, then again I may not, are you some kind of lawyer ?

    I have been with BT for 10 working days. I have phone and broadband with them.

    When searching for options, did the usual braodband check for my adress. My package gives me up to 20 MB. That said when I did the online check, BT stated that I could get 17mb which I was more than happy with,hence placing the order.

    The best I had for a couple of days was 1.5 mb. However for the past week or so I am lucky if I get 500 kbps.

    This is clearly no where near what BT said i could get when they were willing to take my order.The speed is so slow that as far as I am cocerned, it is not fit for purpose, ie game playing, videos on line etc lag.

    Whilst I accept that I have signed into a contract, is there not something that states that goods and services have to be fit for purpose. Clearly my service is not fit for purpose.

    I am not for getting out of my contract simply because I,ve changed my mind. If BT could fix the problem and give me reasonable speed I would be more thna happy.To date they have not even responded to my complaint.

    Do I have any grounds for pulling out under the clause of the service I am paying for is not fit for purpose.

    In theory, no. You ordered "up to 20 meg" and you have "up to 20 meg". Half a meg of speed is still "up to 20 meg".

    According to BT, broadband starts at 135kbps; there is no definition of what constitutes broadband (IMO it's 4Mbps+ but that's just my opinion)

    The speed dropping could indicate the line was training for that period, and the exchange equipment has decided that 0.5Mbps is the fastest stable speed the line can support.

    It could however also indicate a fault, which I think may well be more likely given how far it is from the estimate, so it's something you should pursue with them.

    You could also benefit by registering at www.thinkbroadband.com or www.ispreview.co.uk and getting the statistics from your router, and the people there can analyse that and see if there is a likely fault.

    I would have thought that although you dont want to say here what you are unhappy about, you would have to at least tell BT what it is and give them the chance to resolve it if its a genuine problem, or refute whatever it is that is causing you to want to leave after a short period of time.....how long was the gap between you ordering service and the service starting, if it were more that 7 days then it could be argued that you had a cooling off period, time to call and say ' i've changed my mind', if your problem is the service isnt what you expected, it may be how far short of your expectation the service is.

    then you should start your own thread on what to do if the service you receive is not fit for purpose, rather than hijacking this one, it is for this very reason I did not go into details regarding my issues with BT, when you do that your thread gets derailed and the topic moves to other peoples issues ... apart from that it's just bad manners.

    Yes, hence my contention that bt should abide by DSR regulations, letter (not email) sent to them on day 4 after activation saying I was not happy with the service and wanted out, no response so far. Also waiting on a response from Office of Fair Trading.

    Looked for a new thread didn't find one so replying here.
    Did you check the telephone number or just the post code?
    If you checked the tel number

    and it reported 17Mb and you're only getting 1.5Mb check all extensions are filtered and internal wiring is good.

    If all is good with internal wiring contact BT ask them to check.

    Could you post your router stats Attn Snr Connection speed etc?
    May be able to spot something there.
    Try the quiet line test to hear for any noise 17070 option 2

    If after all this you're only getting 1.5 and BT did quote 17 you have grounds to cancel.

    This is one post that I totally understand I got locked into an 18 month contract but to cutba long story short BT will try to keep charging U even when your contract has FINISHED.
    Read my post.

    To sum up if U R getting Broadband via phoneline make sure you do the following:
    Tell Your provider one month B4 the end of your contract that U wish to discontinue service with them and in the case of BT find another provider ask BT for a MAC code and then they CANNOT charge you a disconnection fee.
    BT will not tell you this but the info is correct.
