Hamish - You're missing out the biggest cost of car ownership, depreciation.
Don't get me wrong, I think cars bicycles and motorbikes are generally better ways to get around than buses and trains as personal transport takes you from where you are to where you want to go whereas public transport takes you from where you're not to where you don't want to be, usually at least.
However if you exclude depreciation you miss a big part of the cost of owning a car.0 -
yes, but there is no/little marginal depreciation on going on one more journey.
if you only have the car for commuting its obviously different, but if you don't live in the city then having a car may be important for a variety of reasons0
