commuter rail fares - impact on house prices

i saw this article on how season tickets are now a bigger cost than the mortgage on average for commuters.
i wonder how this will impact on property prices in commuter areas.
surely it makes less sense to buy a house in one of these areas given that the rail tickets are only likely to rise. this means even if your mortgage reduces or you pay it off you are facing high and ever increasing unavoidable travelling costs.
have to say i've never really understood the logic of 'commuting' and this seems to make it even less logical financially.

fair enough. what are the other benefits of spending hours on a packed overpriced communter train at least 5 days out of 7?
i can spend plenty of my leisure time outside the capital on weekends and don't have to spend it in the same boring commuter town each time. works out cheaper and more time effective imho. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

I don't I work part time as a university lecturer (which is a lifestyle choice as I am financially independant) and I usually go in outside the rush hour (rarely packed). I don't really consider a day return at just over £10 (from Dorking to Waterloo) that excessive.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Only a moron would commute from Swindon to London for £20k a year.
As usual, they use London based issues, illustrate them with national averages and pretend it's a scandal.
I have a friend who pays a peppercorn rent (£5 a year) on his farm cottage. A bus into town once a week costs him £1.80 each way. So, his transport costs for his weekly shop are 36 TIMES as much as his rent!!!!!0 -

well that's different. the article is referring to people in full time employment that they need to commute to work on an everyday basis (the majority). obviously if it is just a day here and there at off peak times that completely changes the goalposts as you wouldn't need a peak time season ticket. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

well it is the london evening standard. and london and its satellite commuter towns contains a massive share of the uk population. the cost of bus fares in st ives is hardly going to have a massive impact on a statistically significant section of the population. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Nope I certainly don't do the 'cattle truck' routine thing. But it's no better when you actually live in London. I worked in the West end as a chartered QS and lived in Battersea for about 15 years and believe me it is also awful travelling within London. After 15 years I was so glad to get out to Dorking!Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

They compare the cost of commuting in the SOUTH EAST, with the NATIONAL average wage. Again, what kind of moron commutes from Swindon to London for £20k a year? Even usng their own figures, the cost of a commute from Swindon is given as about £7k. I'm going to bet that the average house price in Swindon would need more than £140 a week in mortgage payments to service it, even allowing for historically low interest rates.0 -

well if you can't stand the heat...... personally i've learnt to quite enjoy tube rides. even packed ones. a good excuse to stick the ipod in the ears, catch up with the news and smile inwardly at the out of towners panicking to get to the doors two stops too early. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

It was more to do with the fact that I wanted to live in better place and get a dog (I am now the proud owner of a lab/spaniel cross currently snoring away on my lounge floor)Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Following the last census, a large study was undertaken looking at where people travelled from. Broadly, people don't commute from that far away for the most part and although the report is now a bit old (2005 from 2001 data), I doubt much has changed.
Here's a link, as much as anything else it's interesting to see how census data is used:
