I live in a small two bed mid terraced house. just me and a small toddler. I am out most of the day at work, and only have had the heating on at night. i don't use gas for anything apart from hot water and heating.
I checked my meter yesterday and compared the reading with the last "non-estimated" reading from six months ago. It shows that I have used 18K units in that time. that works out to over 300,000kwh!!
I had a new boiler fitted last year and have had no issues with it (fitted from british gas).
I filled up my bath half way last night with just hot water and it used 4 units of gas in the space of about five to ten mins... is this normal?
if anyone could share their experiences or any advice i'd be most grateful.

Perhaps you have a meter that reads in the different format?

There's one for m3 and one for ft3 or similar I believe and they show different readings

Other than that you gas is on glitch?

I'm guessing the real reading is 1800.00 units, but I'll let someone else respond to advise further :)

Well you've not used 300,000kWh in 6 months. Is the readout a digital readout or an analogue one (with dials)? Do you have some historic older readings? What you used last year for example.

Something not right here. 18000 m3 is about 200,000 kWh. Is your home also a power station or aluminium factory perhaps?

18,000 kWh would be high but possible.
    18,000 m3 is obviously wrong.

Probably just a decimal point thing.

the reading is definately right. i am totally ignoring the last two (red) digits of a seven digit meter. so it results in 18000 units.
and it is definately m3 as it even says this on the front of the meter!

Is 18000 what it actually says on the meter? You need to look at the difference between that and the last reading.

18000 is how much has been used since the meter was installed.

in october 2010 my meter reading was 11833.
last night my meter reading was 29812.

the house is over 100yrs old. I don't know if the meter is faulty or if i really am using that much??

So about 100 m3 of gas per day. Usage like this simply isn't possible. Even a leak would have been noticed (and probably destroyed your house) by now.

If the information you are giving is correct then your meter must be faulty. What's the meter currently doing? Take a reading now and another one in 30 mins.

took a reading at 8:40, and it read 29825.
the central heating is on to keep a constant temperature of 20C.
took a further reading at 9:10, and it read 29828.

3 units within half an hour and the heating is on relatively low (as the boiler only fires if the temperature in the house drops below 20C)....is this correct?
