Wordpress is the way to go and lots of businesses are starting to use wordpress sites because they are easy to update without them having to pay out £30 or more to have words changed (yes, there are companies out there who will build a website for £500 and then charge you each time you want to change a word or even change a paragraph and they will charge per word).

I wouldnt do pet sitting or anything else. I would concentrate on the skills that you do have and use them to build a successful business. Success doesnt happen over night and it takes time, effort and a lot of patience before the business starts making money.

There are computer companies out there who are looking to take on engineers who can repair computers on site and maybe give guidance on how to use wordpress etc (I certainly know of one in the Midlands because they are one of my clients). I certainly wouldnt waste your computer science degree on pet sitting.

I was on twitter yesterday and noticed that https://www.smarta.com have a listing of ideas for student businesses which cost very little to set up and can earn you some pin money. Eg asking clubs if they want flyers delivered, setting up your own dj spot in a club on a quiet night during the week and selling tickets to your mates and your mates' mates etc. etc.

If you were my mate and we were sitting in a pub, wondering what to do with you, I'd explain all about how great Wordpress is - and encourage you to install it and really dig around with how it's built, then offer your services to specifically build Wordpress sites for people quickly/easily. Then you can find a niche or three and write some really useful plugins, which could have a free version and a pro version.... and it'd spread the word that you are a Wordpress blokey.

Then .... I'd advise you contact local colleges and offer to put on Learn Wordpress 1-day workshops, also contact local training providers. Once you've done a few of those, contact companies directly and offer a personalised service of "I come to you, we install Wordpress together, I teach you the basics" - but give it a catchy name.

And .... after you'd bought me another half a cider, I'd actually sit down with a pen/paper and we'd draft out your marketing and business plan, direction and cover all the reasons why you'd do things in the way I write down.

I wonder how far we would get because I don't drink! But the idea sounds really good, maybe I'll tweak it a little and give it a go, I really appreciate this, it's given me something to look at from a different approach.

This is another really good post, I think I need to sit down and think about how I can make my degree work for me.

He wasn't suggesting you drink, he was suggesting you pay. ;) I have stunning attention to detail like that. :D
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

    lifestyle-management.eu/wordpress-workshops-build-your-own-self-hosted-website-by-5pm-today

agreed pastures new, not as easy on the eye as it could be, but then you only drink halves of cider :p

ETA copy paste is your friend as Sue said - it was simply a cryptic link :D

And I'm not going to put a 'proper' link to it either. Please tell me they didn't use Comic Sans MS as the font? Seriously?

    For anyone still struggling:
    • select the section of text which starts lifestyle-management and ends by-5-pm-today - it's now been in PN's post and in jexygirl's, so if you can't see it, a trip to the optician really is in order ...
    • copy the selected text
    • paste the selected text into the address bar - you may need to put a www. in front, depends what browser you're using
    • Go!
