Wedding venues on a budget

  • I used to use hitched too, I can highly recommend it. I got married 4 1/2 years ago, we paid for it all ourselves at it came to, in total, £3000. I had a big white dress with a train, we had ushers, and got married in an elizabethan mansion with gorgeous grounds & garden & it's own deer park. We didn't skimp!

We got married at Boughton Monchelsea place (near Maidstone in Kent) which was £500 for 5 hours hire, I also got use of the upstairs rooms (changing room & big rolltop bath - bliss!). Our family all supplied one buffet meal each, our photographer was cheap but ever so good.Afterwards, we hired a village hall, decorated it ourselves (gave hubby & best man & ushers something to do in the morning). Set up a laptop and amplifier complete with all our favourite mp3s, and friends and family all supplied ANOTHER buffet meal for the evening. We told people not to worry about buying us gifts as they were helping out with the food (but everyone bought us gifts anyway!).

Anyway, I won't continue - there were lots of places we saved on (I'd be here all day - feel free to pm me if you want to know more!) but it was a wonderful day and didn't seem cheap at all. Ringign round for quotes is perfectly legitimate and expected, so just get in touch - I got details from about 12 different places. We also got married on a Tuesday, which meant cheaper rates, and everyone can get one day off work if they're important enough to be coming to your wedding! We only bought drinks for the toasts and paid a local village bar to come and set up in the village hall - he was standard pub prices so the guests were happy, and didn't cost us a great deal either.
Lastly - don't panic about it, just be slow & methodical and get all the different info & then you can start to work out what's most important to you. I found it quite enjoyable in the end...
  • Having not got married I'm probably not the best person to advise, but one thing that I noticed was that it will depend on where the ceremony will be. If you are looking a registry office do, then just a party anywhere then that will be cheaper. If you want a licensed premises for it all, then that will be more expensive. I have looked into it a bit (us girlies do from time to time don't we!!) and you are quite limited with licensed venues that are a decent size but also quite cheap.

Def agree with the later ceremony and 1 meal idea though, much better and cheaper than it taking all day.

  • We did our whole wedding for under £1500!!
We had a civil ceremony in a hotel in the afternoon then straight down to the bar/dance room, which was reserved for just us where the buffet was. £320 for the hotel, bridal suite, free decs and food for 80 then about £180 for the registrar to come out to us. Our guests were very impressed and shocked when i told them the price. Helped it was a Tuesday too. Not a dingy hotel either, on the Pembrokeshire coast facing the sea (nice backdrop for photos!)
