How much cash to give at a Chinese Wedding?

You have to give the couple money even if you don't go to the wedding??? So if someone I hated sent me one of these 'red bombs', I'd have to give them a present of money? That's outrageous!:eek:
Supposedly yes but someone you hated surely would not send you an invite in the first instance right?0 -
That would be evil but like I said they are looking to profit hence all the invites.0

I found this really interesting, I didn't know about these Chinese wedding traditions.
At the end of the day, you live in a modern UK society, so you give what you feel happy with.£80 sounded generous to me.It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

Yes and the Chinese culture is very much traditional. I guess this is up to the couple though.0

personally as an older married British person ( age 49 married 29 years) I am shocked to hear that a tally is kept - I can imagine that for some families this would cause real financial hardship ( my own included!) and I would hate to be perceived as "tight or "mean" when £80 would feed our family of four for a week!
at my own wedding we didn't even have a gift list- we were grateful for anything we recieved and we just pleased that our friends and family were there to share our happiness
I know that sounds old fashioned and trite- but it is true
I'm all for tradition - but not at the expense of getting into financial difficulties to please a couple simply because of their heritage.0 -

I think if your boyfriend is giving a gift then you can simple add on some amount and make it a gift from both of you.0
