OP - this is, pure and simple, a dangerous scam that will involve you in a great deal of misery and poverty if you pursue it.

Paul - I strongly suspect that you have now got the measure of these people. One of their preferred methods is an internet 'phone number (difficult for the authorities to trace, you see). Hope you didn't give out any of your personal details.

Be thankful that you have realised before it is too late and don't feel bad. Lots of perfectly sensible people DO fall for these scams.
