GSCC bursary

I am so annoyed with the GSCC! I was supposed to get my bursary on 26th October. Then there was a delay and they said it'll be November - now they're saying it'll be half way through December! What do they expect me to live on  And to add insult to injury the cheeky beggars want me to register as a student social worker but I have to pay £10 for the registration!! Knock it off the flipping bursary you owe me

Has anyone else got theirs yet?

    You and me both Sam!

Everybody on my course (1st yr) is having the very same problem. Most people applied in July/August and were expecting it to arrive late October. But the GSCC said they didn't receive the list from our uni until October and it would then take another 8 weeks. So it's going to be in December and a lot of students have already paid their fees.

It is so annoying and our university say that they sent the list to the GSCC in September. I bet there are a lot of other first year students experiencing the same problem.

Know what you mean about the £10 fee for registration, they cashed that cheque pretty fast!

You enjoying the course? I'm loving it but it would be less stressful having that bursary to help cover costs!
  • Yeah they said the same to us too! Cheeky beggars they are!

I'm loving the course although finding the workload a bit stressful atm - finding it a little hard to adapt after being a stay at home mum for years, but apart from that its great!

Which Uni are you at Catseyez? I'm at Uclan

  • It was exactly the same last year. You can't get your bursary until the uni confirms your registration, and until you've registered as a student social worker. Fees shouldn't be an issue so long as you got your bursary forms in before the deadline and so long as you have your decision letter.

For 2nd and 3rd year students this year, the Bursary automatically came on 23rd October, so long as you'd met all the deadlines.

It sounds like you're the cheeky beggars!? They're giving you free money and you're complaining about it.

But in fact they're not are they coz we havent got it yet! Its cheeky to entice people onto a course with a promise of a bursary and then not to fulfil that promise!

Actually, as a student social worker you have to work 200 days for FREE. That works out at less than the minimum wage. So just exactly what do you think they are giving us free money for?

I have not got my bursary yet either. Have been paying for accomodation since August and am struggling to survive, the GSCC said I will be lucky to recieve it before christmas. I'll be lucky not to be homeless before christmas.

Have started my first placement already, its going brilliant and really motivates you to struggle on through.

Goodluck guys, we need it with the work load.

They might be giving us 'free money' as you put it but it has been hideously delayed - for some we won't be receiving our free cash until almost 3 months after we started the course...with no help whatsoever to live in the mean time - this has meant that I have personally had to take a loan of £300 from the university just so I can get some food and pay some bills. This had to be paid back as soon as the bursary comes through.

Everyone on my course (1st year MA) has had theirs delayed also, luckily ours came through on Tuesday this week and what a relief too.

In my communications with GSCC when I asked what I was supposed to do in the mean time as we were told it might not be until the 19th Dec, and they couldn't have cared less to be honest. At least when I got a student loan for my first degree they managed to pay that on time. Some people it seems might have to wait even longer for theirs.

To those that have had those delayed the reason for it according to my uni was that there was confusion over where the info should have been sent and apparently the GSCC weren't clear about it so most unis ended up sending their info to the wrong place. This wasn't rectified for some time (in my uni's case about 4 weeks after reg) and because this happened for so many unis makes me think the fault lies more with the GSCC than the unis.

TBH I am seriously unimpressed with the GSCC so far and am not looking forward to having to registered with them in future in order to work!

I'm dan sarf in London Sam. Can't say where I study in case people recognise me from my other posts!

Have you got your bursary yet? In the end, we received ours just days after you posted your thread.

I really love the course I'm doing, it's the best decision I ever made. Can't believe the first term is almost over, it's just flown by. Got quite a bit of work to do over the Christmas hols, but it's worth it.

When do you start your placement?

aahhh good old London - by birth place :D

I emailed the gscc and they emailed me back saying that my bursary is coming on the 13th dec so thats good, but they also said if my uni had sent the forms earlier then my bursary would have been paid earlier. Apparently the uni didnt send the enrollment forms until 28 nov!!! I enrolled on 20th Sept!

I'm loving the course too its the best decision I ever made too! lol! All my essays have to be in this Friday and then I just have loads of reading to do over Christmas, and revision for my law exam on 18th Jan. Then I'm off til 1st feb which will be a well needed break!

Placements are a bit of a joke at the moment - our uni is so disorganised coz all the admin staff walked out so it'll be a bit of a take what you can get affair. Main campus have been given theirs but because I'm at a satellite college we've got to wait  We're supposed to get the same opportunities as main campus but we're clearly not because apart from the placements we cant access half of the resources online that we need either!

    Anyway good luck with it!

  • I had to do a 1500 word case study on youth justice, and I've got a 2 hour 2 part exam on Child Law and Adult & Youth Justice.
Not sure which I'd prefer really 2hr exam or 8000 word case study
