Where does the fault lie?

Hi all
I'm having a right bother with data connectivity on my iPhone 4 that's occuring, usually at least once a day, but sometimes more than that.
The problem is that even with a decent signal, the phone is unable to utilise the data connection. If I try and open a site in Safari, I will eventually get a message telling me that the phone is not connected to the internet, or that the server has stopped responding. If I check for email, the spinning icon just spins forever and ever until it times out.
To rectify the issue, I either have to turn airplane mode on and off again, or failing that, turn the phone off and on again.
The issue seems to occur most often when I haven't used the phone for a while, or when I have moved to a new location. For instance, if I last used my phone at home, and then travel to work 8 miles away, the first time I use my phone at work, I tend to get the problem.
The real problem is that I don't know where the issue lies. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is a network or device issue?
Many thanks
Michael.

What networK?
I am no expert, but the signal you see may be 2g while you need 3g for the internet.
Switching off and on... Something to do with Orange and T-mobile sharing 3g networks?0 -

Beg your pardon, sorry, I first posted this on the TMobile forum and totally forgot that I hadn't actually mentioned that name! Yes all of these occassions are with a decent 3G signal so it isn't part of the TMobile/Orange sharing agreement.0 -
You don't need 3g for the internet, 2g will work, it'll just run really slowly, also Orange and TMobile arent sharing their 3g networks yet. I'd advise a 2 way sim swap, if the problem stays with the handset it's a handset fault, so do a restore from iTunes, software update etc, if it follows the sim then its a network fault, that's something TMobile should be able to sort out from their end0

I had something similar on a different phone when I enabled the Orange/T Mobile network sharing on the SIM. In retrospect that was a bad mistake. I had 2 issues
1) The network share is only 2G so a stronger T Mobile 2G signal will be used in preference to a weaker but usable Orange 3G signal
2) On my phone you had to enable data roaming otherwise if you were roamed onto T-Mobile nothing data related worked
I wonder if your problem is either related to moving from using WiFi (at home) to a phone network data connection or a T-Mobile - Orange roaming issue.0
