Removal Co costs?

Hi all,

I have bought a new property and wanted to know if anyone can tell me what I should be expecting to pay in terms of removal costs. I would have done this myself, but after loosing my husband I just don't need the hassle. I'm downsizing, going from a considerable sized property (5 beds), moving 15miles. I will pack everything myself.

PS. Pickfords quote was £1200, seems steep??? Any rough ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Try some small local companies.

We moved house last year - 3 bed semi, moved approx 20 miles, 2 men and 2 vans provided - price was £250

    £1200 seems very high indeed.

We recently moved and from a 2 bed to a 3 bed it cost £385 (including piano removal).

As well as getting a number of quotes, I would be tempted to opt for a company that will charge you a flat fee as opposed to one that will charge by the hour.
  • Do you know anyone who has recently moved that you could ask for a recommendation? I have always found removal people by word of mouth and always been pleased. My opinion is that so long as there is transit insurance in place, there's little risk.

I moved 6 weeks ago and emailed a few local firms with a rough description of size of house moving from and to, distance, any access issues, rough description of any large pieces of furniture and approximate number of boxes and all came back with estimates. I was fully prepared for the estimate changing on the day if anything out of the ordinary came up.

I moved from 3-bed to another 3 bed 25 miles away and was charged £350. The cost would have been slightly lower on the day, but the men stayed and put together the beds for me and moved furniture around to their ideal positions which, being disabled, saved me an awful lot of hassle.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

I put my requirements into www.moveme.com and had a local company come back with 265 pound including moving a three bedroom house, supply and move 25 boxes 20 miles
  • Thank you all. It seems that the quote given is very high. I will try local firms and the website link lcbjcomc provided to see what I get. I don't know anyone who has used a company, we always did it on our own with a large van as have my friends. I'm not actually moving in for a few months but want it all sorting in advance. Will let you know the outcome - thanks again.

I THINK i saw your house getting moved on that programme on tv..its good the way they do it..and they do not damage your house...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

lol I have just read what I typed. That would be a good price to move a whole house for 265 quid!
  • I managed to knock Pickfords' original quote down by half from £800 to 400. Wasn't all that impressed by their service though.
