Hit my car tonight :(

I was pulling into my driveway and hit a skip parked outside my house :( i was gutted. ive wrecked the back driver side of my car from the petrol cap to the back door :( friend reckons the car will be a write off because the damage/ re-spray may be worth more than the car. i am so annoyed... this is all i need :(

Was this after dark, on a public road, and if so did the skip have a light attached to it? IIRC it has to by law. If not all may not be lost... It must also be insured would you believe it.
  • It was a skip outside my own house for my house that the landlord ordered :( plus i was collecting the car from the mechanics because its due an MOT next week. MOT was up on 24th March. Until then i cant drive it because im not insured :( so i basically hit the car uninsured and cant expect to claim-not that they would touch me anyway :( i've cried all night.

Just put if down to experience as the skip owner could claim off you as you where not insured to drive the car.
  • I will :( but i havent done any damage to the skip anyway.

So you were driving your car on the road with no insurance and you want sympathy, you were lucky you didn't hit another car.

I don't actually believe you were driving without insurance. The lack of an MoT does not invalidate your insurance (despite what the insurance company might try and tell you). I used to think the same, but then some of the chaps on the Motoring Board set me straight by quoting the law chapter and verse. Maybe post on there if you want to be sure?

Chin up - I think we've all done something a bit daft at some point - yours just might cost you a little more icon9.gif

Cheer up - it's only a bit of metal! Yes, it's a pain and you can do without the loss of money, but I'm assuming that the car is only worth £2000 or so if that sort of bodywork damage is likely to make it a write-off? Nobody was hurt and you don't have to pay for damage to anyone else's vehicle. And at least you hadn't forked out the MOT fee!

I'm not trying to say it's totally trivial, but worse things happen at sea, and, well, it's done now. Commiserations though, that crunch of metal and the longing to turn back the clock just a few seconds is horrible - been there myself!!
