Assuming you've tested the socket with another appliance, and swapped the mains lead to ensure it's not the fuse, then a dead or failing PSU is probably the cause. 30 minute job on a PC, any generic ATX PSU of the same or higher rating will be OK (unless it's a Dell, some of which require bespoke PSU's).
    400W PSU's cost from £20 upwards.
If it's completely dead, and the case fans don't spin up, I'd say that's the most likely issue.

how expensive is/was the computer, or how good a computer is it,

i only bring this up because i would only use a generic PSU on a system that is pretty old or cheap and that you dont plan on keeping for many more years,

i know you of course do not want to spend out money on a part incase that isnt whats wrong however i just wanted to bring up the fact that generic PSU's are cheap for a reason (not generally very good) and a PSU if it blows up can (not always of course) take the rest of your system with it through a power surge

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

First of all, you should change your monitor and attach CPU with other monitor to check where is problem in monitor or CPU. If other monitor work properly then here is problem in CPU. I think, there has been some operating files or drivers may be miss and your operating system unable to boot your PC properly. Therefore you are getting this problem. Try to check what message you get during rebooting.

I had this happen to me last week on an Ebuyer value PC (just under 2 years old). Nothing worked so I bought a new PSU from a local supplier: http://www.thesystemworks.co.uk
Very cheap DIY fix at £12.14
I still find it strange that I've never had a new PC before this one, and all my 2nd hand rubbish has never let me down. Extended warranties make me laugh.
